Rising alternative rock artist JULES IS DEAD launched their fantastical, spooky new track “Spells and Power Thoughts” today via Atlantic Records.

Tapping into witchy themes and pop-punk guitar lines, “Spells And Power Thoughts” highlights love that would never work out. “I’m addicted to affliction/We’re a deadly contradiction/Your lies, they turn me black and blue,” the artist earnestly sings. Check out the full track below.

Deep-diving into the track, JULES IS DEAD shares, “‘Spells and Power Thoughts’ is basically about this girl I had feelings for. We both admitted to liking each other, but she had a boyfriend the whole time. It was so frustrating and made me act extremely petty for the duration of our friendship. I wrote this song as a way to vent about my feelings, and I referenced The Craft because we both love that movie.”

For writing and production, JULES IS DEAD had the chance to work alongside Killboy and guitarist Henry Lunetta. Plus, they worked with Kyle Black, whose previous experience includes Pierce The Veil, Paramore, Taking Back Sunday, and more.

Recently signed with Gabe Saporta‘s TAG Music, this is just the start for the 17-year-old Ontario native. Sharing supercharged punk-rock “My Own Hell” and “Red Is My Favorite Color,” JULES IS DEAD has a clear musical direction.

“I used to hold myself back from posting anything political, but now it’s become a huge part of who I am and what I want to do with my music,” says JULES IS DEAD.

They continue by sharing, “Especially with everything happening in the States right now—all the anti-trans bills, Roe V. Wade being overturned—so many younger people feel like they don’t have a voice and they can’t change anything. I know how devastating it can be to feel like you’re being silenced, and how much it can mean to know that at least one other person sees things the way you do.”
