Following the release of 2021’s Umbra and in a milestone moment, Grayscale has delivered their first independent offering with the release of their latest single, “Not Afraid To Die.” With the new track, Grayscale has honed in on their most genuine and authentic identity, resulting in “Not Afraid To Die.”
This electrifying track is driven by a passionate kaleidoscope of synths and bombastic drums, skillfully intertwined with the soaring vocal prowess of frontman Collin Walsh. Marking an innovative stride for the band, the fusion of synths with their distinctive pop-punk and rock elements generates an exhilarating sonic experience reminiscent of The Killers‘ early work.
In both the song’s evocative lyrics and its accompanying music video, shot against the backdrop of their beloved hometown, Philadelphia, PA, Walsh and co. explore the multifaceted emotions connected to growing up and leading into adulthood, delving into fear, acceptance, and finding the courage to keep propelling forward. The song’s core message is poignantly encapsulated in the lines, “All of the nights we ate in silence/Holding in violence/Still got my temper from my dad/Never learned to take my time/And I wasn’t allowed to cry.”

“I wanted to capture the romance of that in a sort of tongue-in-cheek fashion (the only way people from the northeast could ever talk about anything romantically),” Walsh shares. “We have been writing the most authentic music to us, from a storytelling and sonic perspective. We wanted this song to sound like a band playing together in a room. We’ve always been a rock band at our core, and we wanted to capture the purest form of that.”
