Industry To Debate 'Future Of Music' At Summit


The Future of Music Coalition (FMC) has set its third annual policy summit for Jan. 5-7, 2003, at Gaston Hall on the campus of Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University. The FMC has designated the summit as a forum to bring together independent musicians, music-biz executives, lawyers, teachers, and politicians to discuss and debate some of today’s most pressing music-related issues, including digital technology, artists’ rights, and Webcasting. Dashboard Confessional's MTV Unplugged Pushed Back To Dec. 17


Dashboard Confessional’s MTV Unplugged 2.0 DVD and CD have been pushed back another few weeks to Dec. 17. The release, originally due Dec. 3 on Vagrant Records, includes 15 tracks recorded at MTV’s Times Square studio in New York for an MTV Unplugged segment, while the DVD is the complete taping of the show, including two songs that did not air on the MTV show. EMI Recorded Music Signs Agreement with Audible Magic


Audible Magic Corporation announced today it has entered into an agreement with EMI Recorded Music as its preferred vendor for audio fingerprinting technology. The agreement, the first between a major label and a provider of content-based identification (CBID) technology services, indicates a strong endorsement of Audible Magic and its range of solutions for identifying, monitoring and tracking multimedia content. Man Busted on Kid Rock's Tour Bus


A man traveling aboard Kid Rock’s tour bus was charged with drug possession after a concert in West Palm Beach. Kevin Joseph McMahon, 36, who identified himself as the rap-rocker’s personal assistant, was arrested and released Sunday from St. Lucie County Jail after posting $16,000 bond. Kid Rock and members of his band weren’t on the bus, police said. McMahon and the bus driver were the only people aboard the vehicle, which was headed to Nashville. Nirvana Best-Of Collects 14 Songs


The upcoming Nirvana collection, much-hyped due to the inclusion of the previously unreleased “You Know You’re Right,” will feature 14 songs overall, according to the Universal Music sales catalog. Webcasters Get Royalties Extension


Smaller Internet music broadcasters are getting an extension on copyright royalty payments that would have been due Sunday, which means they can avoid shutting down. The webcasters will still have to pay up to $2,500 each in fees by Monday. But that is far less than the tens of thousands of dollars that many of them would have owed. The extension, granted by the recording industry and performance artists Friday, came a day after the Senate recessed for the elections without approving copyright rate revisions negotiated between webcasters and the copyright holders. Universal Music Ups Royalties for Song Downloads


Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest music company, has increased the royalties it pays artists on downloaded music, sources close to the company said on Thursday. Universal, home to Sheryl Crow (news), Sting and Limp Bizkit, has increased its online royalty rate and stripped out some charges, a move that could effectively double payments to artists for songs downloaded on the Internet, the sources and experts said.
