5 Ways Apple iTunes Saved Record Stores

Record-store owners owe Apple iTunes a tremendous debt of gratitude for being an uncaring, scatter-brained, inhuman little jukebox: It’s saving their skin right now.

The running narrative in the music world during the past decade is that the physical album is dead, and file-sharing, downloads and, most notably, Apple’s iTunes killed it. Yes and no.

Gabe Saporta knows what happened to Wentz’ face

Late last year, Fall Out Boy fans were shocked when Pete Wentz posted a series of rather grisly photos on his official site, showing him sporting a mean shiner, a knock on his head and a bloody gash across his nose.

How "Guitar Hero" saved guitar music

Early in July, Rusty Shaffer, the founder of Optek, a small music company in Reno, Nev., visited Salon’s offices to show me his invention, the Fretlight guitar. Though it looks and feels like a standard, rock ‘n’ roll-ready instrument, the Fretlight contains a set of LEDs invisibly embedded inside its fretboard — connect the guitar to a computer and the lights spark up to indicate where to put your fingers in order to play a chord. Shaffer is certain that his guitar is a great leap forward for the normally tech-averse guitar industry; the Fretlight, he says, will transform guitar… Read more »

Weezer, Saves The Day Trade Blows In 'Emo Puppet Video War'

Biggie and Tupac, Jay-Z and Nas, Axl and Kurt, Oasis and the bulk of humanity… some musical beefs are sublime, and some are ridiculous. The latest, between Weezer and Saves the Day, is a little bit of both. When reports surfaced that Weezer wrangled Jim Henson’s Muppets for their new video, “Keep Fishin’,” last month, the “emo and puppets” premise gave their former opening band a case of déjà vu. Nearly two months ago, Saves the Day – who opened for Weezer in February – wrapped a video for their second single, “Freakish,” featuring (surprise, surprise) a supporting cast of… Read more »

3 Doors Down Bassist Turns Self In, Faces Assault Charge

Too bad everyone doesn’t take the title of 3 Doors Down’s last single literally. A simple “duck and run” could’ve saved the band’s bassist, Todd Harrell, from an entanglement with the law. Harrell turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Thursday (May 23), after being wanted by police for a misdemeanor simple assault charge, according to a police spokesperson. He was released on a $500 signature bond soon after. A complaint against Harrell was filed by Terry Alexander, 49, on Friday (May 17). In it, Alexander claimed he was attacked at a party in Harrell’s… Read more »

Lifehouse faces brief career – Review

Lifehouse recorded what’s being called the most-played number on radio this year, the lovesick “Hanging by a Moment.” But the L.A.-based pop/rock band brings so little to the table in the way of originality and execution, as witnessed at the first of two sold-out El Rey gigs on Friday, that it’s unlikely the band will be able to build much on the success of that tune. Group’s melodramatic songs bear striking similarities to those of Pennsylvania’s Live and Florida’s Matchbox Twenty, though lacking the lyrical depth of the former and without the songwriting smoothness of the latter. Nearly each entry… Read more »
