No Idle Moments: 'Idol' Winner to Record Quickly

Viewers of Fox’s summer megahit “American Idol” won’t have to wait long to hear the first single from whomever wins the competition. Simon Cowell, the snarly Brit judge-recording exec who’ll be producing the track, said he’ll have the song in stores within three weeks of “Idol’s” Sept. 4 finale. He’ll achieve that feat by asking all of the three remaining finalists to record the song – an original composition Cowell describes as a “big power ballad” similar to Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.” RCA Records has already committed to giving the “Idol” winner a $1 million recording contract that… Read more »

Dave Grohl Says Nirvana Legal Battle Not Worth The Anguish

The Courtney Love vs. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic case is on its way to court, and in late September the world should know more about the fate of unreleased Nirvana material. But Grohl is beginning to question whether all the legal mumbo jumbo is worth the hassle. In April the surviving members of Nirvana asked that Love be forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to test her sanity, and later in the month a judge denied the request, causing Grohl to bang his head against the wall as forcefully as he pummels his drum kit. “At the end of… Read more »

Pete Yorn plans to release two albums next year – the follow-up to 2001’s acclaimed Musicforthemorningafter and a record he made before his major-label debut. While the former will feature the same introspective singer/songwriter roots rock showcased in singles like “For Nancy (‘Cos It Already Is)” and “Strange Condition,” the latter will reveal another side of Yorn, who is currently touring with Weezer. “At the time, I was really into Guided by Voices, so it’s lo-fi, really blown-out vocals and guitars,” Yorn said backstage at the Coachella Festival in Indio, California, this weekend. “A lot of reverb. Kelly Osbourne is right. She is not like the other kids. They don’t make music videos. Ozzy’s daughter and reality TV’s most famous 17-year-old bar-hopper is filming a clip for her cover of Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” in Los Angeles this week. Kelly recorded a demo of the song last month with Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and drummer Jose Pasillas. Jerry Cantrell Perseveres In Wake Of Staley's Death

Of the many fans and musicians devastated by Layne Staley’s death, his former Alice in Chains bandmate Jerry Cantrell was perhaps most affected upon receiving the news. The pair formed the backbone of the seminal Seattle grunge band in 1987, and it was their dichotomy – the tension of Cantrell’s hardened riffs that plodded along as Staley’s sinister vocals crept behind at a skulking pace – that gave the band its appeal to metalheads and grunge punks alike. Cantrell and Staley remained the group’s creative force until their swan song, 1995’s Alice in Chains. In the wake of Staley’s death,… Read more »
