Nirvana Bassist To Rock No More

Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic is packing up his instrument following the universal apathy displayed for Eyes Adrift, the alt-country band he formed in late 2001 with Meat Puppets guitarist Curt Kirkwood and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. “I quit,” he wrote in a post on the band’s official Web site. “I can’t deal. I can’t read the magazines, listen to the radio or watch music television without feeling like I’ve just come in from outer space. I just don’t get it and I probably never did.” Novoselic’s frustrations stem from being typecast as a hard rock performer, and from the recent… Read more »

Rock Photog Taps Subjects For Album Help

Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Jakob Dylan, Willie Nelson and T-Bone Burnett have leant a hand to the debut album from Rusty Truck, the brainchild of former Rolling Stone photographer Mark Seliger. Coda Terra Entertainment will release the 12-song effort on Sept. 24. Seliger met the artists while working for Rolling Stone, but Rusty Truck only began to take shape when a pair of Wallflowers encouraged Seliger’s musical endeavors. Band leader Dylan invited Seliger into the studio to cut a demo. Later, keyboardist Rami Jaffee asked Seliger to play a show with him in Los Angeles. Seliger agreed and later relocated… Read more »

Stones, Timberlake to Rock in Canada

Canada is turning to rock ‘n roll to help revive its tourism industry, hard hit by the SARS outbreak and a mad cow disease scare earlier this year. The Rolling Stones and a host of fellow rockers – including former ‘N Sync singer Justin Timberlake and groups AC/DC and Rush – have been recruited to give a daylong concert on Wednesday. Organizers hope the concert will lure up to a half million people to Toronto, where two springtime SARS outbreaks devastated the convention and tourism industry. The Stones’ Mick Jagger promised that the Toronto concert would be unforgettable: “We are… Read more »

Gob, Default, IME Teach Canadian Kids How To Rock

In the mid-‘60s a trippy Californian pop band belted out a song with the question, “So you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star?” which was followed by the answer, “Just get an electric guitar and take some time, and learn how to play.” Now that some of Canada’s aspiring rock gods and goddesses have done exactly what that Byrds song suggested, a few of them are gearing up for an excitable new music documentary series on the CBC called Rock Camp. Rock Camp will follow 18 young musicians aged 14 to 18 for three weeks and will document… Read more »

Damone: Fast Times At Rock And Roll High – Review

Who can forget that scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High where Phoebe Cates takes off her red bikini top to the tune of “Moving In Stereo” by The Cars, delighting pubescent boys all over the world, not to mention Judge Reinhold. It seems that the antics of Jeff Spicoli and co. rubbed off on some that weren’t even born when the movie came out. Take Massachusetts rockers Damone for instance, who have named their band after the concert ticket scalping weasel character in the flick, and take to the stage to the very Cars tune Judge Reinhold waxed the… Read more »
