Early Matchbox Twenty Secret To Be Revealed

Rob Thomas’ pre-Matchbox Twenty recordings are finally seeing the light of day, thanks to a former bandmate who spent a half a decade trying to put “the nail in the group’s coffin.” Don’t Play With Matches, the only studio album by Tabitha’s Secret (which featured Matchbox Twenty bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette as well as Thomas), is due for October 9 release. Guitarist Jay Stanley – who, along with guitarist John Goff, parted ways with the band in 1995 – fought a five-year legal battle to get the album released. “It’s about putting the past behind me, putting… Read more »

Matchbox 20'S "Secret" Album

Tabitha’s Secret will become a matter of public record with the October 9th release of Don’t Play With Matches. Tabitha’s Secret formed in Orlando in 1993 with Thomas, Yale, Doucette and guitarists Jay Stanley and John Goff. Stanley said the group had been offered record deals by Atlantic and Hollywood Records when the band fractured due to “third-party interference.” “Deals were struck with the [producer Matt] Serletic Production Company and not directly with the band,”… Read more »

Matchbox 20 Embraces Low Key Identity

Rob Thomas stepped off an airplane feeling like a bona fide rock star, with nearly 12 million copies of his band’s freshman album sold and the follow-up effort following closely behind. But when he handed his passport over to a control officer, she asked: “Are you Rob Thomas of Santana? The guy who sang ‘Smooth?”‘ “I was like ‘No! I’m Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty,”‘ he recalled during a recent interview. Thomas’ work on 1999 smash “Smooth,” which earned Santana record and song of the year at last year’s Grammy Awards, has gained him more celebrity than the success he’s… Read more »

The Rolling Stones’ frontman is recording his fourth solo album, tentatively scheduled for release this fall, and it looks like the LP will offer some interesting surprises, one of which was inspired by teen pop’s reigning diva. “Mick’s daughter purchased the Britney Spears record, and Mick apparently heard Spears’ version of his song ‘Satisfaction’ through the walls of her bedroom,” said Courtney Barnes, publicist for Rodney Jerkins, who produced the track.… Read more »
