Depeche Mode tour derailed until June

Depeche Mode has revealed that singer Dave Gahan successfully underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his bladder and the band’s Tour of the Universe will resume on June 8th. Gahan was rushed to the hospital before a concert in Athens, Greece on May 12th, after suffering a severe bout of gastroenteritis. While the frontman was in the hospital, further tests revealed what is described as a “low-grade malignant tumor,” according to a new statement on the band’s Web site. Doctors have ordered Gahan to take a break until June 8th, so several more concerts on the Depeche Mode tour… Read more »

Silversun Pickups say "Swoon" is 'time capsule'

When the Silversun Pickups were writing “Swoon,”  the follow-up to their breakout “Carnavas” album, they were given access to parts of the universe where mere mortals dare not tread. And they soaked in them. “We were on jets that landed on hovercrafts that rolled us onto Jacuzzi-shaped planes,” frontman Brian Aubert laughed. “And on one Jacuzzi plane, there was a submarine, and that was the VIP, and that was going crazy. And that’s where we wrote the album. We wrote “Swoon” on the backs of hookers. In crayon.” He’s kidding. But there’s no denying that the past few years have… Read more »

Concert producers rose to challenge of Obama rally

November 4 was a historic night for the United States, the city of Chicago and, on another level, for C3 Presents. C3, an Austin, Texas-based promoter/event producer whose principals are Charlie Jones, Charles Attal and Charlie Walker, produces Chicago’s Lollapalooza and Austin’s Austin City Limits Festival . It now has another production credit: Barack Obama ‘s election night victory rally in Chicago’s Grant Park. “It was definitely one of the coolest things I have ever been involved in,” Jones says. “It was a humbling experience and very emotional.” C3’s relationship with the Obama campaign began during the Democratic Party presidential… Read more »

My Morning Jacket draws fans with high-energy shows

It’s 4 a.m. on the last night of the South by Southwest music conference, and Jim James is belting out Rod Stewart’s “You’re in My Heart.” A few hours earlier, the My Morning Jacket frontman dazzled an intimate crowd at an Austin church with a mostly solo acoustic set, and the full band’s three other performances during the week were some of the most acclaimed of the industry event. But of all the places James could be right now, it’s a cozy terrace suite at Austin’s famed Driskill Hotel, surrounded by a few close friends, a bucket of Miller Lites… Read more »

AT&T censors Pearl Jam's anti-Bush lyrics

By Pearl Jam fans and Internet watchdogs were up in arms Thursday after it was revealed that AT&T Inc. censored portions of the rock band’s live concert cybercast on Sunday. While performing “Daughter” during the annual Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, the band segued into a portion of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” during which frontman Eddie Vedder sang, “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush, find yourself another home.” Those lyrics were missing from the broadcast. Vedder also railed against oil giant BP during the set, and later, brought a disabled Iraq War veteran onstage to… Read more »

Throat Infection Sidelines Silverchair

Silverchair has postponed four shows on their current U.S. Tour to allow singer, Daniel Johns to recover fully from a case of laryngitis.  Daniel caught the common viral infection of the throat earlier this week after flying Sydney/Los Angeles/Toronto/New York/Los Angeles over just four days. It severely impeded his vocal performance on the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Tuesday. While his Doctor had initially been hopeful that Daniel’s laryngitis would clear up “in a day or two”, he has since advised that the Silverchair frontman should “avoid singing for 4 to 6 days” in order to be guaranteed of… Read more »

Linkin Park, MCR, TBS to Headline Projekt Revolution

NEW YORK – There are plenty of big things about Linkin Park’s upcoming Minutes to Midnight. They include the producer (Rick Rubin), the expectations (um, real huge) and, naturally, the accompanying tour . So it’s easy to understand why LP chose the massive, marble-filled Museum of Television and Radio as the location to announce that tour: the reborn Projekt Revolution, which they founded in 2003. “This is very important tour for us, so we’re excited to announce the return of Projekt Revolution,” Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington said. “We wanna go out there and kick as much ass as we… Read more »

Nirvana At SXSW? Police At Bonnaroo? Behind The Bogus Festival Lineups

Are the re-formed Smashing Pumpkins set to rock Lollapalooza? Will the long-dormant Police return at Bonnaroo? How about a reunited Nirvana taking the stage at South by Southwest, only with Ben Kweller playing guitar and singing Kurt’s vocals? All three sound too good to be true, little more than the pipe dreams of manic music buffs with way too much free time. But incredibly, they’re all “100 percent confirmed” by sources with intimate knowledge about such things. But don’t go crazy just yet. It’s entirely possible that absolutely none of the above information is true. After all, we’re smack-dab in… Read more »
