How George Carlin Changed Comedy

When the culture began to change in the late 1960s – when the old one-liner comics on the Ed Sullivan Show were looking pretty tired and irrelevant to a younger generation experimenting with drugs and protesting the War in Vietnam – George Carlin was the most important stand-up comedian in America. By the time he died Sunday night (of heart failure at age 71), the transformation he helped bring about in stand-up had become so ingrained that it’s hard to think of Carlin as one of America’s most radical and courageous popular artists. But he was. Carlin started doing stand-up… Read more »

Vampire Weekend Frontman Ezra Koenig's Students Recall Playing Pranks On The Future Rock Star

BROOKLYN, New York – What does Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig have in common with Sting and Gene Simmons? It’s definitely not a shared sense of style. But like Sting and Simmons, the cardigan-and-Top-Sider-sporting 23-year-old spent a year as the antithesis of the flashy, rule-breaking rock star: a teacher. Before belting out tunes like “Oxford Comma” and “A Punk” in front of sold-out crowds and landing on the cover of Spin – along with bassist Chris Baio, keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and drummer Chris Tomson – Koenig was juggling band practice and performances with a day job as an eighth-grade teacher… Read more »

Concert promoter Live Nation Inc. is negotiating the exit of its chairman, Michael Cohl, amid a dispute between him and CEO Michael Rapino, according to a newspaper report Thursday. Newlywed Wentz Dishes On Prenups, Pregnancies and Fake Palm Trees

The wedding may have been Alice in Wonderland, but the honeymoon is shaping up to be more Ashlee in underground. “We’re in the basement of a house,” newlywed Pete Wentz told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show this morning. “We’ve got some, like, blow-up palm trees down here. It’s pretty nice, man. A little fake-‘n’-bake tanning booth. It’s gonna look like we went on a private jet somewhere. And we’re gonna save that 30 grand. “The paparazzi thinks we left on some private jet or whatever. You know, the truth is, we’re just sitting down here, eating DiGiorno pizza, getting… Read more »

Gavin DeGraw doesn't wanna be another singer-songwriter

The term “singer-songwriter” makes Gavin DeGraw cringe. “It makes you feel like a weakling the way all the singer songwriters are marketed, you know what I mean? … It’s not masculine enough for me. I don’t feel like I fall into that category in a lot of ways,” he said about his “typecasted genre.” Maybe it’s because he was seen as the sensitive songwriter dude that the gregarious 31-year-old is anxious to break out of that mold. DeGraw – who sings, writes his own songs and plays multiple instruments – debuted his skills as a pop artist on his 2003… Read more »

Hit The Panic Button

AFTER SPENDING two years on the road promoting their debut album, 2005’s “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” the members of Panic at the Disco focused on two new efforts. The first was recording a new disc. The second? “We’ve been playing a lot of hacky sack and getting really good at it,” bassist Jon Walker said with a laugh. “We’ve been bringing it back. It’s the best exercise you can ever get – and it’s fun.” Which just goes to show that even though the group, once known as Panic! at the Disco, has dropped its exclamation point, it… Read more »

Plain White T’s Channel Weezer, Try to Top “Delilah”

Even with the overwhelming success of the acoustic ballad “Hey There, Delilah” last year – which earned the band two Grammy nominations – Plain White T’s lead singer Tom Higgenson says he’s been writing songs for the band’s next record since they finished their last one. Today, the Chicago-based quintet headed into a Malibu recording studio to begin work on their second major label album, the band’s fourth overall, which is expected to hit stores September 24th. While the band isn’t consciously trying to create a “Delilah Part II” (Higgenson points out all of the band’s albums have had slower… Read more »
