Westerberg Makes Album at Low Cost

Paul Westerberg is learning to live on the cheap. The musician is telling people he recorded his new album, “Stereo,” for about one thousand dollars. That’s because he owns his equipment and recorded the album in his basement with no engineer or producer. “I finally realized I can capture the essence of what I do best by myself with simple equipment and I don’t need the money right then.” Westerberg says if his toe taps and someone comes in and says, “Yeah!” then the album is done. However, he says when you’re by yourself, you’re somewhat dependent on yourself. “I’m… Read more »

Fred Durst To Start Rollin' Film On Skateboard Flick

Fred Durst is about to start “Rollin’,” for real. The Limp Bizkit frontman will direct “Lords of Dogtown,” a feature-film adaptation of the current big-screen documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys” which details the origins of skateboarding. Production is scheduled to start in late summer, according to Durst representatives at the Firm. The nonfictional account tells the tale of a group of surfers who take their extreme moves to the street and then the world. What starts as a few dudes sliding around emptied, in-ground swimming pools evolves into a full-fledged sport worth millions of dollars in sponsorships and televised events such… Read more »

Jack Osbourne's Favorite Metallists Meshuggah Prepare For Nothing

Swedish experimental extreme metal band Meshuggah have been praised by the mainstream music press and metal mags alike, and have cultivated a loyal underground following since their first LP, Contradictions Collapse, was released in 1991. But even the largest crowds at a European metal festival pale in comparison to the millions that heard Meshuggah on “The Osbournes” when Jack, in an effort to piss off the family’s obnoxious neighbors, blasted “Future Breed Machine” from the band’s 1995 album, Destroy, Erase, Improve. The young metal powerbroker also recruited the band to play the second stage of this year’s Ozzfest, and the… Read more »

Blink-182, Tony Hawk To Appear On 'The Simpsons'

Anyone even remotely familiar with Blink-182 knows they’re one of the most animated bands in rock, and soon their funny fodder will be drawn from a place where groups such as Aerosmith, the Who, Spinal Tap and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have once touched down: Springfield. Blink-182 recorded their voice parts for the 300th episode of the animated Fox series on Wednesday, according to a network spokesperson. Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk is also set to appear in the same tricentennial show and will tape his vocals Monday. More Ramones, Less Bizkit In Quarashi's Icelandic Rap-Rock

For those who think rap-rock is just about tapped out, Quarashi would like to present their spin on the genre. “We’re trying to do rap music the way Joey Ramone would have done rap music,” said Sölvi Blondal, the band’s producer and drummer. “What we are trying to do is punk-rock rap music, but a little bit more 1990s, like when Public Enemy was doing Fear of a Black Planet and when Cypress [Hill] was coming up with their first album. We tried to approach that style…. We didn’t want to be like Limp Bizkit or these bands that are… Read more »

Papa Roach Distance Themselves From Rap-Metal Peers On New LP

When Jacoby Shaddix (a.k.a. Coby Dick) was bashing his forehead bloody with the mic night after night on last year’s Ozzfest, it became pretty clear that Papa Roach were a tortured, turbulent group – one far removed from the cookie-cutter rap-metal bands to which it was frequently compared. As if to hammer home the point, the band has distanced itself even further from its former peers on Lovehatetragedy, which comes out June 18. Aside from a rapped section in the first single, “She Loves Me Not,” and a few half-spoken vocal lines in various other songs, there’s nothing on the… Read more »

Ex-Van Halen Singers Team Up For Sam & Dave Tour

It’s not exactly what Van Halen fans had hoped for, but it’s definitely intriguing. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, former singers for the group, will co-headline a national tour beginning May 29 near Cleveland. And if Tuesday’s (April 16) press conference to announce the outing is any indication, Diamond Dave and the Red Rocker are going to be the perfect pairing. Like a rock and roll comedy duo, the blond bastions of partying traded gags one-after-another at the Sky Bar, setting each other up and flashing face-wide grins at each punch line. “Sammy and I are like fraternity brothers… Read more »
