Jewel, R.E.M. Offer Passion Over Politics At AIDS Benefit

“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Michael Stipe asked the crowd soon after R.E.M. took the stage Thursday night at the venerable venue. “Practice,” the crowd blurted in unison. “Well, we didn’t,” Stipe responded. “So if you hear a bum note or something that doesn’t sound right, I urge you to sing louder in your head.” The tour-shy Athens rockers and granola-pop folkie Jewel were among those on hand for an evening of spirited entertainment at “You Gotta Have Friends: Partners in the Fight Against AIDS,” a benefit for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Super Bowl Packs In Music Stars

The lineup of musical acts at this year’s Super Bowl is so long that you might think the football game was the sideshow. The National Football League says it will be the most entertainment-packed Super Bowl ever, with performances by U2, PaulMcCartney, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony and others – not just on Super Bowl Sunday, but throughout the weekend. Part of the reason for the celebrity overflow is a patriotic theme after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which caused the Super Bowl to be pushed back a week. “With the events of September 11th, we’ve redefined and… Read more »

Saves The Day Prep For Weezer Tour, Dismiss Detractors

For any young band, the idea of performing before thousands on their first arena tour is a daunting proposal. When the heroically titled Saves the Day were tapped as openers for Weezer’s North American tour, which begins February 5, however, they pushed the butterflies aside and focused instead on rising to the occasion. “Every tour that we go on, we hope to be more comfortable as a live band,” bassist Eben D’Amico said. “Just being able to do our thing onstage that much better. We’re always honing and perfecting what we do.” While the Princeton, New Jersey-rooted quintet may come… Read more »

Treach Calls Naughty By Nature's Track With Pink 'A Smoker'

Being the most vocal member in a group called Naughty by Nature, it’s no wonder Treach isn’t shy about exposing himself. Last year he shot simulated sex scenes for an online adult movie, and for his role as a hit man in this spring’s “Love and a Bullet” he shot a full-frontal nude scene. But apparently baring all is limited to clothing. The man who built his star by being down with “O.P.P.” and writing on ladies’ kittens is a little more inhibited when it comes to the 411 on his personal relationships, especially the rumors that he has been… Read more »

Papa Roach Promise More Rocking, Less Rhyming On New LP

One might expect Papa Roach, who toured for two years behind their multiplatinum major-label debut, to take some recovery time and leisurely write and record their follow-up. One might be wrong. As a matter of fact, Vacaville, California’s most famous export has nearly finished recording a new album after only three weeks in the studio. It’s expected in stores by June. “We really expected it would take longer, but everything is going so well,” drummer Dave Buckner said late Wednesday night after playing a few songs at a North Hollywood studio. “A lot of bands come into the studio and… Read more »
