Avril Lavigne Gives Squishy SpongeBob Song A Harder Edge

Before Avril Lavigne could cover the theme to “SpongeBob SquarePants” for the pineapple-dweller’s upcoming movie soundtrack, some changes had to be made. After all, a girl known for wearing combat boots, spiked jewelry and clothing emblazoned with skulls and crossbones couldn’t sing lyrics as silly as “absorbent and yellow and porous is he” with the same sing-songy bounce as the original. “I made the song a little more edgy,” Lavigne said. “It’s kind of like the rock version of [the original]. There are a lot of loud guitars, and we picked the tempo up a little and sang it with… Read more »

Avril Lavigne Uses Own Voice To Mezmorize Crowd – Review

Recently boasting about how she always sings live, Avril Lavigne had to make good on her claims and put Ashlee Simpson, in her place. After all, some of Lavigne’s past performances have been less than on-key. Quite expertly, Napanee’s pint-sized hero delivered the vocal goods, save for her “Complicated” encore in which she still struggled with the verses’ low notes. But otherwise, the nearly packed house at the Hanger had someone worth screaming for (ear-deafeningly, of course). Lavigne’s mall-punk compadres from Ajax, Not By Choice, riled up the tykes – a group of mostly parental accompanied 10 to 17 year… Read more »

The Beatnuts Want The Original Beat

The Beatnuts are one of those groups that are all about hip-hop. The New York City duo JuJu and Psycho Les are back with Milk Me, an album that stays true to what they started 10 years ago – creating pure, good hip-hop. The album’s first single for the streets, “Hot” featuring Greg Nice, is proof with a sick head-nodding horn beat that will give ‘Nuts fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for. ChartAttack recently spoke with producer/MC JuJu while at a gig in Toronto about staying true to his game and the current state of hip-hop. ChartAttack: You guys… Read more »

Scott Weiland Misses The Memo On When To Make Political Statements

Scott Weiland has secured himself a spot as the very last celebrity to speak out about today’s U.S. presidential election. A little late in the game, the singer – famous for Stone Temple Pilots, taking a whole lot of drugs, and now Velvet Revolver – posted an anti-Bush message on his band’s website last night. Yep, last night. The night before the election. As part of his lengthy statement, Weiland defended his late arrival on the political scene: “If you’re asking, ‘Why did you post this now? The day of?’ It’s because I want it to be the last thing… Read more »

A Perfect Circle, eMOTIVEe – CD Review

eMOTIVEe(Virgin/EMI) Laced with cover songs and rush-released as an anti-war, anti-Bush protest record, there’s no denying A Perfect Circle’s noble intent with eMOTIVe. The checkered musical adventure features, amongst others, takes on Depeche Mode’s “People Are People,” Black Flag’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and the ubiquitous “Imagine.” The problem though, is the atmospheric, swirling and, frankly, passive reinterpretations APC present. Dressed with little more than the occasional industrial splurt, Maynard sings almost exclusively in hushed tones and the guitars are all but muted throughout. The result is a record more suitable as a soundtrack for pushovers… Read more »
