Artists look to investors as labels wane

There was a time when most aspiring musicians had the same dream: to sign a deal with a major record label. Now, with the structure of the music business shifting radically, some industry iconoclasts are sidestepping the music giants and inventing new ways for artists to make and market their music – without ever signing a traditional recording contract. The latest effort comes from Brian Message, manager of the alternative band  Radiohead, which gave away its last album, “In Rainbows,” on the Internet. His venture, called Polyphonic, which was announced this month, will look to invest a few hundred thousand… Read more »

Michael Jackson not resting among the stars…yet

As befitting the King of Pop, Michael Jackson may forever be part of Hollywood’s starriest constellation…eventually. Led by a police escort, the Jackson family  arrived at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at approximately 8:15 a.m. for an hour-long service, while nearly a dozen helicopters hovered overheard, and hundreds of press and fans gathered outside the gates. But the morning ceremony  did not include a burial. Instead, after the private funeral inside the cemetery’s Hall of Liberty ended shortly after 9 a.m., Jackson’s coffin was loaded into a hearse to be transported 11 miles away to Los Angeles’ Staples Center for the… Read more »

Lawyers spar in Paris Hilton film contract dispute

Paris Hilton hated her 2006 movie “Pledge This!” and refused for months to make promotional appearances for it despite a contract requiring her to do so, lawyers for the film’s investors said as trial opened Thursday in an $8 million lawsuit against her. “During the six-month period, at no time would she take 10 minutes to do a phone interview,” said attorney Bryan West, who represents the investors. With Hilton nodding vigorously from her defense table seat, her attorney Michael Weinstein insisted she did numerous appearances for the movie but was unavailable to meet many requests by the film’s producers… Read more »

Pelosi shuts down resolution on Michael Jackson

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise “contrary views” about the pop star’s life. Lawmakers are free to use House speeches “to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish,” said Pelosi (D-CA). “I don’t think it’s necessary for us to have a resolution.” A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) cites some of the singer’s charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian. Even before Pelosi’s comments, some Democrats said privately they did not… Read more »

MGMT casts Joanna Newsom, monsters in 'Kids' video

Psych-pop duo MGMT has finally unveiled the video for its Oracular Spectacular track “Kids” nearly 10 months after it was released as a single. The 2008 Artist To Watch and last year’s Hot Band Everyone Wants To Be In has assembled a true labor of love: a six-minute video starring Joanna Newsom as a mom who totes around a toddler who sees monsters worthy of GWAR’s percussion section everywhere he looks. (The band insists no children – and presumably no monsters or harpists – were injured during the shoot.) MGMT said that the video has been in the works for… Read more »
