Album review: Chicago quartet Just Left debuts with Victory Records

Think about if someone approached you in a record store asking for something that blends the unique vocal sound of Hit the Lights, the emo power of The Early November and the homegrown pop-punk sound that The Starting Line have perfected. If that person were savvy enough they would hand you a copy of Think Fast from Just Left, the band’s second album and debut for Victory imprint Standby Records.

MxPx celebrates 17th anniversary with live Webcast

Today marks 17 years to the day that rock juggernaut MxPx performed its first show in the backyard of Mike Herrera’s former Bremerton, Wash. home. In that very suburban spot, the band created a recording studio out of the free-standing garage. The Clubhouse, which has since become a memorable and historic location for the group, will be host to a live greatest-hits performance this Wednesday. “I’ve spent over half my life in MxPx. Let that blow your mind a little!” drummer Yuri Ruley exclaimed. With bands sprouting up left and right, longevity is an attribute found in few and far… Read more »

The Used set to release 'Artwork'

The Used is proud to announce that its fourth album, Artwork, will be released on Sept. 1. Produced by Matt Squire, Artwork is a raw collection of 11 songs that not so delicately teeter between aggressively discordant and charmingly hooky. The first single, “Blood On My Hands,” premiered June 30; it sold over 5,000 copies in the first day and shot to No. 9 on the iTunes Alternative Chart. “‘Blood on my Hands’ sums up everything about The Used,” guitarist Quinn Allmann said. The single is confined chaos, brutally thrashing one moment and proffering a pop-driven, sing-along chorus the next.… Read more »

“We played music together and we decided we’re going to play music together again,” Travis Barker told the Grammy audience when Blink-182 reunited to present the Best Rock Album award Sunday night. For Blink, it was their first time onstage together since December 2004, two months before the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Now that the band has confirmed a new album is in the works, Rolling Stone is taking a look back at their history in a new photo gallery: Blink-182’s Rock Show. Blink-182 formed in 1992 in Poway, California, but it wasn’t until 1998 that guitarist Tom… Read more »

Gabe Saporta on drinking, surgery, new album

Three years ago, Cobra Starship weren’t even a band. Two years ago, they weren’t one either, but at least things were beginning to happen. Gabe Saporta – tired of watching his band Midtown being mired in the major-label quagmire – began writing songs on his own, under the name of Cobra Starship (apparently borrowed from a brand of vintage jackets). Somewhere along the way, he got tapped to write the theme song for the Samuel L. Jackson flick “Snakes on a Plane,” which became the first official Cobra release. Since then, they’ve released two full-lengths, kicked out a keytar player… Read more »
