Music stars lobby Calif. lawmakers on contracts

Beck, Deftones and Offspring singer Dexter Holland joined Recording Artists Coalition founders Don Henley and Sheryl Crow at California’s State Capitol on Wednesday to support new legislation that could change the relationship between recording artists and their labels. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Matchbox Twenty’s Paul Doucette, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Carole King, Ray Parker Jr. and Jonatha Brooke also appeared in Sacramento, California, calling on legislators to support Democratic Sen. Kevin Murray’s Senate Bill 1246, legislation that would allow artists to function more like free agents, according to a spokesperson for the Recording Artists Coalition. Murray’s bill aims… Read more »

Creed, Linkin Park, Ludacris, Nickelback Stay Locked At Top Of Chart

Over the past week there were explosive developments concerning the fate of American Taliban member John Walker Lindh, imploding energy company Enron and president Bush’s problems with pretzels, but very little has been changing on the album chart. That means Creed’s Weathered will hang on to the #1 slot of next week’s Billboard 200, giving the band a solid two-month run as top dogs. Linkin Park will hold tight at #2 with Hybrid Theory as they embark on their last tour before working on new material, Ludacris will remain steady at #3 with Word of Mouf and Nickelback’s Silver Side… Read more »

Bad Religion Ready "Reunion" CD

For certain punks, there was no Bad Religion from 1996 through 2001. During that dark period, co-songwriter Brett Gurewitz split the seminal act he co-created with his pals in high school. He was disenchanted with the band’s major-label deal (at Atlantic), overwhelmed by the sudden hugeness of Epitaph – the label he founded to release Bad Religion records and eventually home to Rancid and the Offspring – and increasingly strung out on smack. The band would release two albums in his absence, both guided solely by the vision of Gurewitz’s estranged collaborator, Greg Graffin. Both records – 1996’s Gray Race… Read more »

The controversial video – directed by Francis Lawrence – made its MTV debut last week on the August 20th episode of TRL, with the band on hand in the studio to introduce the clip. The much-anticipated “SATELLITE” arrives in stores nationwide on September 11th. The video’s remarkable success can be attributed to the support of both P.O.D.’s loyal fanbase – known as the “Warriors” – along with equally enthused newcomers, many of whom were… Read more »

Etheridge Alludes To Woman In Love Song

Melissa Etheridge may rank among the world’s most successful openly gay performers and a poster child for gay parenting, but until now the singer/songwriter has never directly referred to women in her songs. “Even though people know exactly what I’m singing about it, sometimes the gay community gets like: ‘When are you going to sing a song about a girl?”‘ Etheridge, 40, told Reuters in an interview at her favorite coffee house in Santa Monica, California. “And I think, haven’t I done enough already?” The musician from Kansas has sold more than 25 million records and has become an icon… Read more »

The Ramones Reappear On Music Scene

It’s the kind of small moment on which rock ‘n’ roll history turns. It was Fall, 1978. The Ramones had just completed their fourth album, “Road to Ruin,” and the band felt certain it had recorded a hit single: the impossibly catchy “I Wanna Be Sedated.” But the band was overruled; label executives opted for another track, “Don’t Come Close.” That single quickly disappeared, along with the Ramones’ hit-making aspirations. “We really wanted ‘I Wanna Be Sedated,”‘ recalls guitarist Johnny Ramone. “But the record company picked the singles.” So the No. 1 hit in November 1978 instead was the fluffy… Read more »

Review: Blink-182, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket

You can dismiss Blink-182 as cartoons if you like. They’re certainly not going to stop you. They even call their new album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket: Say it out loud, let your inner eighth-grader savor the cadence of the phrase. It sums up Blink-182’s wiseass brat-punk ethos almost as well as their recent live album, The Mark, Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back), which featured the butt-stupidest stage banter since Kiss’ Alive! (Mark: “You can leave now and beat the traffic!” Tom: “Or you can stay and beat your meat!” – and they get paid for… Read more »
