Songwriters, composers, and music publishers are making preparations to one day collect performance fees from Apple and other e-tailers for not just traditional music downloads but for downloads of films and TV shows as well. Those downloads contain music after all. These groups even want compensation for iTunes’ 30-second song samples. In the future, Apple may be required to pay licensing fees to ASCAP and BMI for the downloads of TV shows and films it sells. At a time when many iTunes shoppers are still fuming over Apple’s first-ever increase in song prices, the demands by the American Society of… Read more »

Panic At The Disco Lose Two Members

Panic posted the announcement Monday (June 6) on their official site, hinting that creative differences may have caused the split between Ross, Walker and the remaining bandmembers: frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith. “Though the four of us have made music together in the past, we’ve creatively evolved in different directions, which has compromised what each of us want to personally achieve,” the statement read in part. “Over the years, we have remained close and honest with each other, which helped us to realize that our goals were different and that parting ways is truly what is best for… Read more »

Friday marks final signoff for analog TV service

TV stations across the U.S. started cutting their analog signals Friday morning, ending a 60-year run for the technology and likely stranding more than 1 million unprepared homes without TV service. The Federal Communications Commission put 4,000 operators on standby for calls from confused viewers, and set up demonstration centers in several cities. Volunteer groups and local government agencies were helping elderly viewers set up digital converter boxes that keep older TVs functioning. Any set hooked up to cable or a satellite dish is unaffected. “When you’re alone like me, that’s my partner,” Patricia Bruchalski, 82, said about her TV.… Read more »

Kanye West compares Beyonce, Lady Gaga to legends

Kanye West and his Caps Lock button were back in action on the rapper’s blog yesterday in a post about the role of celebrity photographers. Just days after pleading not guilty to charges of assaulting a TMZ photographer, West applauded the skills of one paparazzo and compared some of music’s biggest names with superstars of another era in an effort to prove a point. Kanye was inspired by a candid photo of Rihanna, the muse of his new 808s & Heartbreak video “Paranoid,” as she was stepping into a yellow cab in New York City. “ Yo why can’t all… Read more »

'American Idol' finale: Kris Allen upsets Adam Lambert

Call him the “dark horse,” the “Come-From-Behind Kid,” the humble crooner. Call him whatever you like. But from now on you also need to call Kris Allen your “American Idol.” After a historic tally of nearly 100 million votes, the shy 23-year-old singer from Conway, Arkansas, pulled off one of the most surprising wins in the show’s nearly decade-long history by taking the crown from the theatrical season-long frontrunner, Adam Lambert. After nearly two hours of anticipation, when the time came for host Ryan Seacrest to announce the results, Allen and Lambert stood arm-in-arm, their friendship looking much more like… Read more »

Miley Cyrus hopes to start a dance craze

Miley Cyrus is attempting to teach an adult the Hoedown Throwdown, the big dance number from “Hannah Montana: The Movie” and it’s not going well. “We did it in one day!” she gasps. “We just all kind of made it up as we went along.” It doesn’t help that Cyrus offers this consolation and advice over the phone to a journalist who’s trying to follow along on YouTube — and untangle herself from the phone cord. “Well,” Cyrus patiently explains, “you have to be semi-coordinated to do it.” This is exactly how Cyrus’ legion of preteen female fans must be… Read more »

Rockers Kings of Leon stake out stateside turf

NASHVILLE —  Watch Nathan Followill breeze into his local Nashville watering hole, and it’s obvious that he’s well known and well liked by the crew at McCabe’s Pub. Clad in sweats and a Yankees cap, the Kings of Leon drummer comes off more as cool local guy than international rock star Nothing in this manner indicates that his Nashville-based rock band’s fourth album is finally making the Kings as big in the United States as they have been in Europe since 2004, when the group had back-to-back No. 1 singles in the United Kingdom According to the band’s label, RCA,… Read more »

Springsteen can't stay above The Fray

The Fray just demoted the Boss. One week after Bruce Springsteen scored the first No. 1 debut of the year, the Denver rockers displaced him  with their eponymous sophomore release. The Fray sold 179,000 for the week ended Sunday,  per Nielsen SoundScan to 102,000 for Springsteen’s  Working on a Dream at No. 2. The Fray’s breakthrough debut, How to Save a Life, never cracked the Top 10, but the success of singles like “Over My Head (Cable Car)” and the title track pushed sales of the 2005 release north of 2 million.
