Beastie Boys Bring The Boroughs To Toronto – Review

Toronto’s ACC was packed to the brim with people of all ages, ready to check out the Beasties. After a stripped-down set by Talib Kweli, The Beastie Boys touched down. Wearing old school uniforms (Mike D rocking archetypal Cazal shades) and hysterically oversized mesh caps, the B-Boys kicked an opening set that never seemed to quit. As bizarre images and camera shots of Mike, Adam and Adam floated around on massive screens, the three were in constant motion, seeming to tag each other as they traded verses. After about 15 minutes of this, they took a moment to catch their… Read more »

Youth Vote Campaigns Falls Flat, Dispite $40 Million Spending

While the vote count in Ohio plays out, there is one fact that is not in dispute. The same percentage of eligible voters between 18-29 showed up to the polls yesterday as they did in the 2000 Presidential election. Despite the fact that over $40 million was spent by the New Voters Project, Rock the Vote, MTV Choose or Lose, Declare Yourself, Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, and Smack Down Your Vote, as well as the Democratic and Republican National Committee, the percentage of eligible voters between 18-29 in yesterday’s election remained at 17%. Ahleuchatista, The Same And The Other – CD Review

The Same And The Other (NFI ) With a name that’s partly culled from an old Charlie Parker-Miles Davis tune, it’s only fitting that this instrumental group specialize in improvisational jazz-rock jams. The Same And The Other is a blistering half-hour exploration of bass, drums and guitar, with tracks like “Good Question” kicking off with random bits of instrumental chatter before locking into insistent grooves. What’s compelling about the album is that even in the absence of lyrics, the songs feel like stories. Unpredictable and energetic, The Same And The Other is a treat for those who don’t cling to… Read more »

How Green Day's Dookie Fertilized A Punk-Rock Revival

Green Day will toast the release of American Idiot on Tuesday, but perhaps an even bigger cause for celebration these days is the 10-year anniversary of their breakthrough LP, Dookie. The modern-day classic not only launched the Bay Area punk trio into the mainstream, it opened the door to a mid-’90s wave of popped-up punk and provided a launching pad for the current crop of melodic pop-punkers. “[Dookie] changed my life,” confessed Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden. “It made me want to start Good Charlotte…. Right after that record came out, we were like, ‘We have to start a band in… Read more »
