Sum 41 Judge Success From 'Playboy' Playmate Pictures

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley and his band were recent guest photographers for Playboy magazine-and, not too surprisingly, enjoyed the experience. Whibley says it’s one of the most notable things the band has ever done. “We were guest photographers for Playboy a couple of weeks ago, so we got to take photos of Playmates all day,” Whibley said. “I mean that was…That was one of those moments where you’re like, ‘Yeah, OK, I’ve made it now.’” Whibley added that he had such a good time, he wants his next job to be working at Playboy. Sum 41 is taking a… Read more »

Sum 41 Banned In Manitoba!

“What the hell is your problem, Manitoba? Phone me and tell me what your god damn problem is with our DVD.” That’s the message that Sum 41 guitarist Dave “Brown Sound” Baksh would like to send to the Manitoba government. Last night, the Manitoba Film Classification Board informed Sum’s label, Aquarius Records, that the bonus DVD, Cross The T’s And Gouge Your I’s, that is packaged with copies of the band’s new album Does This Look Infected? has officially been rated R. That means, if kids under the age of 18 want to buy the album without the DVD being… Read more »

Sum 41 Sober Up On Does This Look Infected?

When Sum 41 wrote last year’s All Killer No Filler, the bandmembers were all still in high school. Toilet-dunking bullies, drinking buddies, unrequited puppy love, impish practical jokes and weekend parties were what their lives consisted of, so that’s what the sang about. But now they’ve toured the world, experienced some real-life trauma and tapped into current events (at least a little bit), so the boys in the band – singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley, guitarist Dave Baksh, bassist Cone and drummer Steve Jocz – are in a slightly different place, and as a result they’re penning some harder, more sobering songs.… Read more »

Sum 41 Become Fun Sordid Ones At NY Club Gig – Review

“The last time we were here,” declared Deryck Whibley from the stage, “two girls came up and made out.” The pronouncement by Sum 41’s singer/guitarist Tuesday at CBGB was met with screams and raised hands, an indication that several fans were willing to participate in a reenactment. “This time we have to top it,” the adorable, spiky shorn frontman added, and approached bassist Cone McCaslin, tilted his head and parted his lips. Psych! Both pulled away at the last second. “No way!” they said in unison. The fourth stop on the band’s Sum On Your Face club tour wasn’t filled… Read more »

Sum 41 Spoof Strokes, Stripes, Vines In 'Still Waiting' Video

With songs like “Fat Lip” and “Motivation,” Sum 41 developed a reputation for cheekiness and tomfoolery. Their new album doesn’t exactly transform them into tree-hugging environmentalists or pulpit-preaching activists, but it shows the bandmembers leaning toward maybe growing up just a little… kinda. Many songs on Does This Look Infected?, due November 26, aren’t about downing brews, scamming chicks or teenage angst. Instead, Sum 41 singer and lyricist Deryck Whibley addresses issues a little more sobering. “I guess I watched too much CNN while making this record,” he said. “Also, I guess I’m getting older. When you’re young you have… Read more »

Sum 41 Add Up To Two Bands During Latest Studio Sessions

Should Sum 41 decide to record a cover while working on their second full-length, John Cougar Mellencamp’s “Hurts So Good” might be a fitting selection. In addition to tracking the follow-up to last year’s All Killer No Filler, the Canadian quartet are creating an EP by their alter ego, Pain for Pleasure. They hope to have both releases out in late November. Fans may remember Pain for Pleasure as the group who looked frighteningly similar to Sum 41, only dressed like metalheads, performing their namesake song as a coda to the “Fat Lip” video. But this time out, the pop-punks’… Read more »

Sum41 Dodge Panties, Play Metal-Lovin' Fools At Tour Launch

April fools were on the loose at the kick-off date of the Sum Like It Hot Tour Monday night at the Electric Factory. At the head of the parade was Deryck Whibley, who led his band, Sum41, in an hour’s worth of snotty punk rock, heavy metal reverence and irreverent shtick. The singer donned a Nike headband thrown onto the stage from the audience. “Does this make me cool?” Whibley asked before taking it off. “I’m just not cool – sorry.” Dave Baksh, Sum41’s lead guitarist and stage foil to Whibley, replied, “Nothing will make you look cool.” Maybe not… Read more »

Sum 41 to Rock Harder on Next CD

Canadian punkers Sum 41 will begin tracking the follow-up to their 2001 breakthrough, All Killer No Filler, in late April. They have been writing and demo-ing new material during the Tour of the Rising Sum, the band’s first headlining jaunt. Following the conclusion of the tour – which finds the boys rocking the U.S., Japan and Europe – the foursome will enter the studio with plans for a late 2002/early 2003 release. Greig Nori – who manned the board on Sum 41’s debut EP, 2000’s Half Hour of Power – is expected to produce the album. He also serves as… Read more »

Bedroom Bedlam Abounds In Sum 41 Clip For 'Motivation'

Pop-punk fans looking for an incentive to get them off their butts during the dreary winter months ahead are about to get a swift kick in the pants from Sum 41. The Ontario quartet have chosen “Motivation” as the third single off their debut album, All Killer No Filler. The track, which follows the previous singles “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep,” is expected to surface in mid-January, according to an Island Records spokesperson. For the video, the group forwent the services of Marc Klasfeld (Alien Ant Farm, Jay-Z), who helmed the album’s previous clips, in favor of superAmerica (Ronan… Read more »
