Shakira’s ‘She Wolf’ global pop for the wolf inside us all

Conventional wisdom states that you should not review a record after it has already been in stores for more than a month, but when the record in question has been described as “endearingly bonkers” and “fantastically strange” and leads with an Italian-disco-indebted first single that features the word “lycanthropy,” well, sometimes you have to ignore conventional wisdom.

Lady Gaga ineligible for Best New Artist in 2010

Few new artists in recent years have made an impact on the pop music scene as quickly as Lady Gaga, who won the Best New Artist Video Music Award this September. But her catchy number-one hits and unpredictable performances are not enough to make her eligible for the new artist category at next year’s Grammy awards.

Gaga fights Madonna, debuts ‘Bad Romance’ on SNL

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera stepped up to kiss the Queen of Pop’s ring – well, Madonna herself – at the 2003 VMAs, and Lady Gaga got her chance to pay homage this weekend on Saturday Night Live. But rather than play it straight, SNL cast the two in a mock catfight that pit Gaga (the night’s musical guest) against Madge (in town promoting best-of collection Celebration). This being a musical by Green Day, though, it wasn’t your typical curtain speech. “Are you ready to rock tonight?” shouted the house manager, John Gay. And sure enough, the crowd roared back, “Yeah!” Such is the rowdy mood surrounding “American Idiot,” a rock opera drawn largely from Green Day’s multiplatinum 2004 album of the… Read more »

DJ AM laid to rest in Los Angeles

Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein was laid to rest yesterday with a service at Los Angeles’ Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary. Reports that AM’s former fiancée Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden attended the burial were said to be “inaccurate.” AM’s girlfriend, Hayley Woods, DJ Jazzy Jeff, actor Scott Caan and producer the Alchemist, who reportedly served as a pallbearer, were present at the service. Blink-182’s Travis Barker, whose band had postponed its most recent tour dates so he could mourn the loss of his friend and collaborator, was also in attendance. Barker, who last year survived a… Read more »

Michael Jackson’s body had lethal levels of Propofol

Coroner’s office investigators found lethal levels of the fast-acting, powerful anesthetic Propofol in Michael Jackson’s body, a search warrant unsealed Monday in Houston revealed. The documents reportedly quote the Los Angeles County coroner’s office conclusion after Jackson’s autopsy, according to the Los Angeles Times, although L.A. County officials have put a security hold on the official autopsy results in the Michael Jackson case until police complete their investigation. The warrant revealed that Jackson’s personal physician, cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, told Los Angeles Police Department detectives that he had been treating Jackson for insomnia for six weeks and that he’d been… Read more »
