Veteran modern rock act R.E.M. has made a few changes in its fall North American tour. The group, which kicked off its first world tour in four years June 21 in Utrecht, Holland, has added two dates and altered city and/or venue details for a handful of others on the North American leg of the outing, which will now get underway Aug. 29 in Vancouver. That date and an Aug. 31 show in Missoula, Mont., both with Wilco opening, have been added to the itinerary. R.E.M. have set an October 28th release date for their second compilation, In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003. The collection will feature two new tracks, “Bad Day” and “Animal.” The former will also be released as the album’s first single; the band shot a video for the track last month in Vancouver. The compilation will be released on the heels of the first leg of R.E.M.’s world tour, which launched last Saturday in Holland. One of the great surprises from the 2003 MuchMusic Video Awards show came when Lava/Atlantic recording artist Simple Plan were announced as the winners of the People Choice Award for “Favorite Canadian Group.” Fans voting via phone and email chose Simple Plan as their favorite group over the likes of Sum 41, Our Lady Peace, Swollen Members f. Canadian rock bands Treble Charger and Our Lady Peace were the big winners on Sunday as the MuchMusic Awards, Canada’s music video awards, were handed out in Toronto. Homegrown sensation Avril Lavigne picked up the trophy for best international video by a Canadian for her single, “Sk8er Boi,” and country star Shania Twain, who was raised in Timmins, Ontario, picked up the MuchMoreMusic Award for her “Up!” video. Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough’s fourth annual Lupus benefit concert, Lupus 2003, takes place Friday (June 20), at Hard Rock Live located at Universal Studios City Walk in Orlando, Florida.
