Fatboy Slim Dominate MTV Video Awards

Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” shot up the competition by bringing home six “Moon Man” trophies – including breakthrough video and best direction – Thursday night during the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. But “Weapon of Choice,” directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Christopher Walken dancing up a hotel’s walls, was shut out of the prestigious video of the year prize, which went to Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink for “Lady Marmalade.” Last year’s big winners ‘N Sync walked away with four trophies for “Pop,” including the coveted Viewer’s Choice… Read more »

Tool Stretch Out And Slow Down In Show With King Crimson

There might be a better setting for a Tool concert, but it doesn’t exist in waking life: The prehistoric, rugged beauty of Red Rocks Amphitheater felt almost threatening when serving as the physical backdrop for the band’s volcanic performance on Friday night, which opened a brief tour with prog-rock veterans King Crimson. Flanked by rock formations pushed up from the bubbling earth more than 60 million years ago (and donning a bald head, sporadic body paint and a black leather bodice), Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan looked like an androgynous ambassador of the apocalypse. Judging by the capacity crowd –… Read more »

The Cult Relive Goth's Glory Days – Review

For many local fans, the enduring concert memory of goth-metal rock band the Cult is of the already-declining group being thoroughly upstaged at the Forum in 1995 by Lenny Kravitz and his band, an event followed by the Cult’s breakup a few months later. But an unexpected reunion in the late ’90s, culminating in a triumphant two-week, sold-out run at the West Hollywood House of Blues, signaled the desire of singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy to recapture the band’s lost glory days. They haven’t quite come back that far, but the Cult, mach II, is a worthy beneficiary… Read more »

The lovebirds can currently be caught trading verses, Crip-walking and courting each other in the video for Kurupt’s “It’s Over.” The L.A. by way of Philly rapper may be on to something – their duet helped him debut at #10 on the latest Billboard 200 albums chart with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey. “Mick Jagger Influenced By Britney Spears!” – a headline from the Weekly World News, home to stories about boy/bat hybrids and 200 lb. babies born with Hitler moustaches? Nope. The Rolling Stones’ frontman is recording his fourth solo album, tentatively scheduled for release this fall, and it looks like the LP will offer some interesting surprises, one of which was inspired by teen pop’s reigning diva. “Mick’s daughter purchased the Britney Spears record, and Mick apparently heard Spears’ version of his song ‘Satisfaction’ through the walls of her bedroom,” said Courtney Barnes, publicist for Rodney Jerkins, who produced the track.… Read more »
