Taking the stage at 10:30 p.m., dressed in a purple double-breasted suit and white shirt, the rock-fueled R&B act didn’t say a word to the crowd as he and his band ripped through a funk heavy jam session including few of his staple hits. However, when the band played a New Orleans inspired version of “When… Read more »

Prince wants his music back. Just a month before he releases the first DVD from his New Power Generation Music Club, the club has sent its paid members a list of album rarities Prince would like returned in his continuing struggle to guard against bootlegging and to control his own sonic real estate. In an e-mail sent Wednesday to the NPGMC, fans were asked to “Help the cause!” and look for “anything with a WB logo that was unofficially released during Prince’s tenure at that label.” Among the suggested discs to send in, according to a list provided by the… Read more »

Prince Sues Website For Copyright Infringement

Prince has sued FreeMyHeart.com following that site’s decision to post songs from the singer’s Xenophobia live concert performances this summer. Paisley Park Enterprises is suing the Me’Shell Ndegeocello fansite $150,000 for each song posted online, notes the Miami Herald. FreeMyHeart.com site operator Matthew Lankford told the paper, “For him (Prince) to seek $150,000 per song to try to ruin me for doing nothing more than promoting him is overdoing it.” Prince’s suit, filed in federal court on Wednesday (September 25), claims Lankford posted the exact time and place of the songs’ recordings, which constitutes a clear violation of copyright-infringement laws.… Read more »

Prince Sued By Friend

Prince and his Paisley Park Enterprises are the subject of a defamation lawsuit filed by his former girlfriend, Charlene Friend, in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday (April 19). The plaintiff, Friend, was “romantically involved” with Prince in 1991, and was the recipient of several gifts from the singer, including a jacket worn by him in a 1991 concert, an audiocassette, a Christmas card, a comic book, and the video Gett Off, according to court papers. Friend claims in the suit that she retained ownership of the items after the couple “discontinued their relationship,” and that Prince had never requested… Read more »

Prince 'Goes There,' Avoids The Obvious At New York Gig

The first rule when you’re about to drop $75 to $150 on a concert ticket should be “Do your research.” Anyone who expected a straightforward greatest-hits retrospective from Prince at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall Tuesday night will have to write their pricey ticket off as a fine for laziness. After all, any artist who is as unpredictable as Prince has historically been should warrant no less than a quick Google search for set lists. Therein, the scientific fan would find that “Little Red Corvette” and “When Doves Cry” aren’t bloody likely. Rather, much of the One Nite Alone Tour… Read more »

Oingo Boingo, Prince In The Mix As DJs Seek To Uplift

In the era of MP3s, CD-Rs, iPods and the ubiquitous mix-CD, everyone from Starbucks to your parents has tried their hand at the DJ game, often with perfectly positive results. But after four arduous days of hearing dance music permeate every sonic inch of the Winter Music Conference, this cultural development bolstered the status of every DJ – the real kind – that performed, laying plain the artistry of their craft. That said, the vast majority of WMC parties fell into the risk-free category of monochromatic, genre-based music, whether progressive house, tech-house or any other permutation in between. DJs who… Read more »

Prince Makes Rainbow Connection On New Album

After making a name (or symbol) for himself by singing about Corvettes and cream, Prince will once again use his royal platform to tackle more serious subjects, namely religion and race. The Minneapolis singer hopes The Rainbow Children will be less a typical pop album and more a conversation starter, according to his spokesperson. The album – “Last December” and “The Everlasting Now” in particular – hints at Prince’s religious beliefs. The latter track, for example, asserts that, “Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father will bring the everlasting now.” Although The Rainbow Children, which follows 1999’s Rave Un2 the… Read more »
