Music Biz Falls Off the Scale


Analysts fear the worldwide music market plummeted 10% in value to $33 billion last year – the worst drop in record business history. Official stats are due April 16 from the industry’s trade group the Intl. Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), but the estimated scale of the downturn has alarmed observers. Kurt Cobain Diaries Expected In Stores This Fall


Avoiding what was expected to be an intense bidding war over Kurt Cobain’s journals, a New York imprint snapped up the world publishing rights on Monday for a seven-figure sum. Publishers who got an advance look at the diaries were told to submit their bids by 11 a.m. on Monday, but the auction was called off around 10 a.m. after a deal was struck with Riverhead Books, a division of Penguin Putnam. “The journals are an intimate, unadulterated portrait of an artist of great influence,” Riverhead’s Julie Grau, who will be the project’s editor, said in a statement released Tuesday… Read more »

New Bon Jovi Due Next Fall


Bon Jovi are set to begin tracking their eighth album and follow-up to 2000’s comeback success, Crush. For the album, tentatively titled “Bounce,” the band will again call on their Crush cohort Luke Ebbin to co-produce (alongside singer Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora), in Los Angeles’ Henson (formerly A&M) Studios and at Sanctuary, Bon Jovi’s home studio in New Jersey. Pressplay On Track To Launch This Fall


Pressplay, a online music joint venture between recording giants Vivendi Universal’s Universal Music and Sony Corp.’s Sony Music, is still on track to launch this fall, a spokesman said Friday. The Pressplay spokesman declined to comment on a specific launch date for the service, which was originally earmarked to launch in September by Vivendi Executive Vice President Edgar Bronfman Jr at an industry conference in July. Irish Rockers U2 Return To America For Fall Tour


Irish rock band U2, which just finished a European tour, will return to North America in October for 15 arena dates, the group’s promoter said. The tour will begin on Oct. 10 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and will conclude on Nov. 18 in Las Vegas, according to a statement issued on Monday by Clear Channel Entertainment, a unit of Clear Channel Worldwide. Live Signs On For Fall Jane's Addiction Trek


In support of its forthcoming album fifth album, Live will hit the road in October with Jane’s Addiction, according to a source close to the band. While the dates for the jaunt are still not set in stone, a likely kickoff date of Oct. 2 in Boston has been tentatively set for the tour. Funk/punk/rap-rockers 311 will follow their summer on the Warped Tour with an extensive headlining tour across North America.
