Lillix, "Falling Uphill" – Review

Talented kids living in the middle of nowhere Canada get bored, learn some instruments and write some songs. Throw in several accomplished producers (Linda Perry, Phillip Stier and The Matrix) overseeing some of the latest in North American pop, and thus is born Lillix – a quartet of teenage and young twentysomethings who sing about angst and life with eternal girl-powered optimism. “Falling Uphill” is a solid but not groundbreaking debut, and one that will please the teen set – even those looking for some edgier bubblegum. A blend of tight harmonies (the track “Quicksand” is a great example) and… Read more »

Backstreet Boys Shoot For Fall Album Release

The Backstreet Boys will soon be heading into the studio to record a new album. Once members wrap up some individual projects, the award-winning group will reunite to record, with a fall release date in mind. Howie Dorough told Billboard: “I’ve done a lot of writing in the past year. I’ve written about 12 songs individually and about 15 songs group-wise. I think we’ll get together again in March, after Kevin (Richardson) gets done with Chicago and Nick (Carter) gets done with his solo tour. I’m hoping to have the new album out at least by September, (but) I’d like… Read more »

Southeast Asia Gigs Fall Victim to Terror Scare

Concert tours to Southeast Asia have become the latest casualty of recent bomb blasts in Bali and the Philippines with veteran jazz guitarist George Benson and rock groups Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis canceling shows. “George Benson did cancel some dates that he had lined up for Indonesia,” promoter Nigel Peters said on Tuesday. “It’s obviously a direct relation to the Bali bombing. That’s the only reason this decision was taken.” A bomb attack at a nightclub on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali on October 12 killed more than 180 people, most of them Australian. Ten people were… Read more »

Rest of Grateful Dead Plan Fall Tour

Since things went so well during the weekend reunion of the Grateful Dead’s surviving members, the band has decided to go ahead with a fall tour. “All I can say is that the fall tour was set and approved contingent on a good weekend and since it was a far better than good weekend I am certainly confident the shows will go,” said Dennis McNally, the band’s publicist and biographer. McNally said Monday he didn’t know when tickets would go on sale for the 15-show tour of the Midwest and East Coast in November and December. Thousands of Deadheads converged… Read more »

The Strokes Line Up Fall Headlining Tour

Even though a bum knee kept singer Julian Casablancas from performing with his band on select dates of Weezer’s Enlightenment Tour, the Strokes will be back on their collective feet October 1 when they kick off a two-month victory lap around North America. The tour marks the one-year anniversary of the release of the Strokes’ debut, Is This It?, which has sold over 640,000 copies to date. The NYC garage poster boys are simply happy to be on the road again. “The album is being received a lot better then I dreamed of two years ago,” Casablancas said. “I really… Read more »

New Found Glory Get 'Toxic Avenger' Team For Clip, Drummer's Arm Falls Off

Just because New Found Glory are getting love from the “TRL” crowd doesn’t mean they’re changing their ways or cleaning up their act. Sure, the band’s next video is for the song “Head on Collision,” one of the slower, more melodic tracks from their latest album, Sticks & Stones. But the clip, directed by the Malloys, will reveal a previously unseen twisted side of the group thanks to the help of schlock horror production company Troma Films, which provided the makeup and special effects for the video. “Me and our singer Jordan are really big fans of ‘The Toxic Avenger’… Read more »

Online Radio Pioneer Falls Victim To New Royalty Rates

The first commercial radio station to cybercast its over-the-air playlist is among the first to fall victim to newly imposed royalty rates for online broadcasts. KPIG stopped streaming music online Thursday, ending a near seven-year run on the Internet. According to its own estimates, the small-scale station would have been forced to pay $24,000 in back royalties (or approximately $3,000 per month) from this year alone on an arm of the station that generates little or no revenue on its own. It was purely for the benefit of those who were interested in hearing it. Based in Freedom, California, KPIG’s… Read more »

Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst Reports Wes Borland Return Appeal Falls Flat

After enlisting the help of fans to appeal for the return of his ex-guitarist on Friday, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst has now reported on the band’s official Web site that the plan to lure back Wes Borland has failed. “I’m glad that you people read my news recently about Mr. Borland,” he said in a post on Monday (May 27). “He’s received your emails and has responded negatively, but that’s no reason to give up. He replied by saying that 75 percent of all his emails were telling him to never be with Limp Bizkit. I’m glad some of you… Read more »

Next Fallout Single Won't Be Determined By Default

Their video for “Deny,” starring Muhammad Ali ‘s daughter Laila Ali, is nearing release, and the hard-rockin’ song is going strong on radio, but Default are already planning their next single. Vocalist Dallas Smith would love to hear the propulsive “Sick & Tired” booming across the radio, but he’s aware that marketing two heavy songs back-to-back might not be the best career move, and he and his bandmates can’t agree on a softer track to push. So they’re leaving it up to their fans to vote on the Default Web site for the next single from Fallout (2001). ” ‘Live… Read more »

Onyx Pay Homage To Fallen MCs, Gangsta Females On Part 2

Many artists and fans alike cite a lack of creativity for the recent glut of uninspired rap albums. Onyx blame something else: lack of energy. The bald-headed trio who exploded onto the hip-hop scene nearly a decade ago with smash singles “Throw Ya Gunz” and “Slam” from their riotous debut album, 1993’s Bacdaf-up, hope to inject the same type of kinetic energy into the rap game as they did 10 years ago. “Right now the game is fabricated with a lot of MCs that really don’t focus on a lot of energy in the streets,” said Fredro Starr, who is… Read more »
