Warner Music Canada has a new boss. The music label just announced that Steve Kane has been named as the new President of the company. Kane will start his new job on January 1, 2004. Kane isn’t new to Warner – he’s been working as the Senior Vice President and Managing Director since 2001. The new gig will see him overseeing the day-to-day operations of the whole company as well as acting as a liaison to Paul Rene Albertini, the President of Warner Music International. A crowd infuriated by the last-minute cancellation of a punk rock concert tore through downtown Montreal, overturning cars and smashing into shops, police said Wednesday. Five people were injured. Seven people were arrested in Tuesday night’s violence – one woman for armed assault, and five adults and one minor for mischief and disturbing the peace, police Inspector Yves Surprenant said. “The event surprised us, by its magnitude and the speed with which it happened,” Surprenant said. Canada is turning to rock ‘n roll to help revive its tourism industry, hard hit by the SARS outbreak and a mad cow disease scare earlier this year. The Rolling Stones and a host of fellow rockers – including former ‘N Sync singer Justin Timberlake and groups AC/DC and Rush – have been recruited to give a daylong concert on Wednesday. Santa Cruz’s Good Riddance are stopping to do a few dates in Canada on the current leg of their tour. The stops are limited to Quebec and Ontario with two dates each. Multiple Grammy nominee Avril Lavigne picked up six nominations Wednesday for the Junos, Canada’s music awards, including new artist and album of the year for her hit debut release “Let Go.” Shania Twain, who will host the April 6 ceremony at the Corel Center in the Ottawa suburb of Kanata, received five mentions, including album (“Up!”) and artist of the year. Love’s Arthur Lee might be making a triumphant return around the United States, but he won’t be playing north of the border for now. The 57-year-old Lee-who last year concluded a five-year prison sentence for a gun violation in California for which he continues to maintain his innocence-was denied a visa by Canadian officials and had to cancel his planned Monday (August 5) show at Lee’s Palace in Toronto.
