With a platinum debut album on their resume, Chicago nü-metal powerhouse Disturbed could have hired almost anyone to produce their second disc. Instead, they returned to Johnny K, who worked on the band’s 2000 LP, The Sickness. Disturbed entered the K’s Groovemaster Studios in Chicago last weekend to begin recording their second album, Believe, which is scheduled for release in September, the band’s publicist said. Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis will not appear on the soundtrack to the forthcoming movie Queen Of The Damned due to a stipulation in his contract with Epic Records, which prevents him from working for other labels. To solve the problem, Davis and Warner Bros., the label which is putting out the movie’s soundtrack, have assembled various stars of today’s alternative music scene to cover the five tunes, which Davis sings in the movie as the voice of the Lestat character. With Black Sabbath’s August tour canceled, and Disturbed’s opening slot with it, the Chicago quartet will use the month following Ozzfest to begin work on their next album while preparing for a headlining jaunt of their own. After Ozzfest concludes August 12 in Holmdel, New Jersey, Disturbed plan to head home to begin pre-production for their second album, which they hope to release next summer, according to their management. Disturbed is finding some new challenges now that it has moved from its spot as the OzzFest second-stage headliner to a role as support act on the main stage. The group made the switch after an estimated 20,000 fans swarmed the second stage on the tour’s opening day in Disturbed’s hometown of Chicago last month (June 8). Ozzfest 2001 has undergone its first lineup change after just one show. Tour spokespersons estimated that twenty thousand fans, many from a less-than-ideal vantage point, clogged the second stage to see Chicago’s own Disturbed perform at the event’s Friday kick-off in Tinley Park, Illinois. Witnessing the overwhelming crowd response, organizers bumped the band from closing out the second stage to joining the big boys on the main stage, sandwiched between Crazy Town and Linkin Park. The change took effect Saturday at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin. Ozzfest continues its path of devilish debauchery today in Indianapolis.
