Elvis Costello Flashes Cruel Smile To Fans in October


In the late 1970s, Elvis Costello wore a punk snarl to go along with his sharp suits and horn-rimmed glasses. Twenty-five years later, the prolific troubadour has replaced it with something more subtly sinister. Cruel Smile, a companion LP to Costello’s latest studio album, When I Was Cruel, features B-sides, rare cuts and live versions from that album, as well as a handful of fan favorites. Due October 1, the 14-track enhanced CD also includes the video for When I Was Cruel’s “45,” according to an Island Records spokesperson. SONICblue Music Device Advances Its Digital Strategy


Consumer electronics company SONICblue Inc. on Monday unveiled a high-end home entertainment hub that can store an entire music collection and furthers the company’s thrust into the budding market for digital audio and video entertainment. At about $1,500, SONICblue’s Advanced Digital Audio Center can become the centerpiece of a music enthusiast’s wired home. It features a 40-gigabyte hard drive that can record up to 650 hours of music. Backstreet Boys' 'The Hits: Chapter One' Due October 30


The Backstreet Boys release their first-ever greatest-hits package, titled The Hits: Chapter One, on Tuesday (October 30). The 13-song collection includes the group’s new single “Drowning” and also comprises songs from the group’s 1996 album Backstreet Boys, 1999’s Millennium, and last year’s Black & Blue. In conjunction with the album release, the group will also release a VHS/DVD video titled The Video Hits: Chapter One on November 6. Jay-Z Dogged By Bootleggers Again, The Blueprint To Come Early


It seems that if Jay-Z wants to keep his future albums from hitting the streets before their proper release dates, he’ll have to hire a security detail that rivals the size of the secret service team in his video for “Izzo (H.O.V.A.).” Bootleggers in New York started selling two versions of Jay’s album The Blueprint last week, and on Tuesday (September 4), Def Jam announced that it has once again pushed the LP’s release date up one week, this time from September 18 to September 11. Flea Hosts IFC IndieRock Week, Chili Peppers To Hit Studio In October


Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is slated to host IndieRock week on the Independent Film Channel, September 24-30. It’s a week of music-oriented film, rock ‘n’ roll, and commentary on the world of music and movies. Avril Lavigne, New Found Glory On 'American Wedding' Soundtrack


Avril Lavigne probably never went to band camp, but that didn’t disqualify her from the soundtrack for “American Wedding,” the third slice of celluloid from the “American Pie” series. The previously unreleased Avril song “I Don’t Give” will be featured on the disc, which comes out July 22.
