My Chemical Romance Leads 'Black Parade' Through Anaheim

It’s beyond obvious that the guys in My Chemical Romance have come a long way since the days when they were compared to the likes of Thursday and other bands in New Jersey’s emo/post-hardcore scene, if their concert at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday night was any indicator. Lead singer/songwriter/MCR mastermind Gerard Way and company entertained a sold-out crowd with an energetic and polished show that made clear their desire to be arena rock gods. However, the band members’ decision to not only play their latest album “The Black Parade” in its entirety but also perform the set in… Read more »

My Chemical Romance Brings Black Parade to Life

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire – Fellow marchers in The Black Parade : If you are like me, after being blown away last fall by the astounding musical achievement that is My Chemical Romance’s latest album, you thought to yourself, ‘How are they ever gonna do this live?’ The record – art rock meets glam rock meets punk, with a dash of vaudeville – is chock-full of death and hospitals and cancer and soldiers and scary teenagers, and it begs for an over-the-top live show. At long last, the boys have delivered. After months of teasing us with holiday radio sets and… Read more »

MCR's 'Black Parade' Stage Show Shapes Up

My Chemical Romance will incorporate theatrics and visual storytelling on their forthcoming world tour. The New Jersey rockers released the concept album ‘The Black Parade’ last year, which revolves around the death of a young man from Cancer, and the band reveal that they’ll be pulling out all the stops for the live experience, which kicks off with a U.S. tour from Feb. 22. “The story’s gonna be told visually this time around. As far as us becoming (fictional band) The Black Parade and some of the different characters from the record, yeah, they will be there,” guitarist Frank Iero… Read more »

Jack Black Parodies My Chemical Romance on Saturday Night Live

In one of the most unexpected and delightful moments from this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, host Jack Black fully embraced his inner emo with a pitch-perfect parody of My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome To The Black Parade.” During the “Goth Kid On Vacation” musical skit, dressed in the classic Black Parade marching band jacket, a long black wig, and standing atop a marching band float, Black hilariously embodied MCR frontman Gerard Way as he belted out the song’s iconic opening line: “When I was a young boy…” The Tenacious D frontman and School Of Rock star leaned into the emo theatrics,… Read more »

5 Best Years For Alternative Artists At The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Ah, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A hallowed American institution and a can’t-miss event for Garfield fans. As the New York City-based parade progresses through the streets, so too does it run across almost every television screen in the nation. While the floats and balloons ranging from the Pillsbury Doughboy, Kermit The Frog, and Snoopy have remained iconic for years upon years, we are still fixated on the unbelievable alternative celebrity guest cameos through the mid-2000s and early 2010s. After all, what’s a better precursor to bizarre, unsolicited political dinner conversation than a live performance from Plain White T’s? These… Read more »

On Being Kind and Forever Emo: A Conversation with Mayday Parade

A lot can change in ten years: personalities, tastes, relationships. For Mayday Parade the last ten years have been a chance to grow as a band, explore new ways to entertain, and to connect with their fans. Which is why—almost exactly a decade after seeing them live for the first time—I’m sitting on a tour bus in Chicago, chatting with frontman Derek Sanders. We’re at the back of the bus. On one side of Sanders, guitarist Brooks Betts is fiddling around on a laptop, on the other, bassist Jeremy Lenzo pre-signs a stack of Sunnyland CDs. The window is cracked… Read more »
