Britain’s largest pay-TV firm BSkyB is to launch an online subscription music service and has signed the world’s largest music group Universal as its first partner, in a deal that could challenge Apple. The service will offer downloads to keep and unlimited listening through streaming for a single monthly subscription service. The tracks will be in the MP3 format, meaning they can be used on many devices including the iPod and mobile phones. Fourth-quarter losses skyrocketed at AOL Time Warner Inc. after a staggering $45.5 billion charge to account for the struggling media conglomerate’s plunging value. The company also announced Wednesday that former cable TV mogul Ted Turner is stepping down as vice chairman. In the three months ending Dec. 31, AOL lost $44.9 billion, or $10.04 per share, compared with a loss of $1.8 billion, or 41 cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 2001. Concert-goers who want to see some of their favorite bands this summer may have to dig deep into their wallets. Tickets to see major performers like the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney are expected to reach into the hundreds of dollars. The Wall Street Journal said average Stones’ tickets will run between $50 and $100, with top-tier tickets going for about $350. Average ticket prices for McCartney’s tour are running about $135 dollars and that’s before ticketing and service charges, according to a publication that tracks the concert industry. XM Satellite Radio reported that the company’s losses nearly tripled for its first quarter ending March 31, noting that its consolidated net losses increased to $42.7 million ($.80 per share), up from consolidated net losses of $14.2 million ($.30 per share) in the same quarter a year ago. XM also said that it raised more than $200 million in the first quarter of 2001, enough funding to keep the company operational into 2002.
