Even if you’re convinced that a band changing their sound is the worst thing that’s ever happened to you, it’s perfectly natural for someone’s music to develop and shift from album to album. But every once in a while, those shifts are so dramatic that the early work ends up sounding like it was released by an entirely different band than the more recent material.
After reuniting for its first show in more than four years, Blink-182 has announced its summer tour dates. The band’s official return comes when they play the The Late Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday, May 21st. Blink will be joined by Fall Out Boy on the road for two-thirds of their reunion jaunt, with Weezer picking up the remaining dates. Los Angeles – California pop-punk trio Blink-182, famed for its practical jokes and disdain for clothing, has gone on “indefinite hiatus,” with no plans to work together again, its Geffen Records label said Tuesday. Any band that continues playing while one of its members bleeds profusely has gotta be punk rock, regardless of how poppy its harmony-filled songs are. Despite what his Blink-182 and Box Car Racer bandmate Tom DeLonge said recently, Travis Barker isn’t “in, like, 10 bands.” The drummer does have a third group, though – one without ties to the dude ranchers who made him famous. Barker plays drums in a trio with Rancid singer/guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman called the Transplants, and they’re scheduled to release their debut album in the fall. There were few surprises when Blink-182’s Civic Tour 2001 rolled into the Warfield on Tuesday. Singers Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge belched and told poo-poo and pee-pee jokes. Kids crowd-surfed. Bras landed onstage. New songs – there were two – sounded like old songs. Even the encore was preceded by an assurance from bassist Hoppus that the band would be right back to play more songs.
