Blink-182's Tom DeLonge Salutes His Roots On New Album

Perhaps because it’s so hard to honor someone with a fart joke, Blink-182 singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has formed a side project called Boxcar Racer to pay tribute to the bands that influenced him. The group, which also includes Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy, will release its still-untitled debut album on May 14. DeLonge wrote all of the material, played guitar and bass, and sang almost all of the vocals. “This record is directly influenced by the bands that mean the most to me – Fugazi, Refused and, of course, Blink-182,” DeLonge told MTV.… Read more »

Legal deal resolves fate of Grateful Dead guitars

A long-running dispute over four famous guitars that once belonged to the late Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia has been resolved, with the instruments to be divided between remaining band members and the man who crafted them, lawyers said Tuesday. Under the agreement, guitar maker Doug Irwin will get custody of guitars dubbed “Wolf” and “Tiger” for their decorative inlays, while the Grateful Dead will keep two other instruments “It’s all signed and inked. It hasn’t yet been approved by the court, but we don’t see any problems,” said Douglas Long, an attorney representing Irwin. Long said that Irwin planned… Read more »

'I Was Curious,' Slash Says Of GN'R Show He Was Banned From

Las Vegas wasn’t paradise city for Slash when he tried to check out Guns N’ Roses at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino late last month. It seems the band’s former guitarist wasn’t welcome to the jungle. Slash, who quit the group in 1996 and later formed Slash’s Snakepit, said he was in Vegas on vacation when he learned that GN’R would be playing there in two weeks’ time, on New Year’s Eve and two days before. He said he made some calls and got on the guest list for the December 29 show via the venue and the promoter.… Read more »

Pressplay improves online music delivery, but it's far from perfect – Review

Pressplay (www.pressplay.com), the online music service launched Dec. 19, is an order of magnitude better than rival MusicNet (www.musicnet.com), which launched Dec. 4. The gap is so great that I don’t think MusicNet deserves to sign up a single additional subscriber without first undertaking a major overhaul to match pressplay. Not that pressplay is perfect; the major record labels are still struggling to figure out how to sell their music online without opening the door to further piracy. But pressplay succeeds at delivering all three components of the online music experience: “streaming,” where you listen to songs without putting them… Read more »

Telewest almost drops MTV

MTV, the once invincible music station, almost lost its place on one of the UK’s biggest cable networks because of competition from new stations developed by the British magazines, Q and Smash Hits. It has been forced to lower its charges dramatically in order to remain accessible to viewers signed up to Telewest. MTV Networks, the music television arm of Viacom that also includes VH1 and a variety of genre specific channels, is understood to have dropped its charges after Telewest decided the fee it was paying for each subscriber was too high. Telewest had said it would dump MTV… Read more »

Springsteen Wards Off Legal Challenge

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen on Tuesday warded off a last-ditch challenge to a London court victory won by him nearly three years ago in respect of unauthorized use of his music. In a complex case watched closely by the international music community, the High Court in 1998 blocked British company Masquerade Music from releasing an album of the star’s earlier work. That decision was upheld by the Appeal Court earlier this year and now three law lords in the country’s highest court have given it their backing as well. After a private hearing and without giving any reasons for their… Read more »
