All-American Rejects: Red, White And So, So Blue

Though some artists have been known to exaggerate a broken heart for the sake of art, the All-American Rejects have no need for such artistic license. For them, the truth is often sadder than fiction. “There’s rarely a happy ending in any of my songs,” singer/bassist Tyson Ritter said. “As far as the guy getting the girl in the end, it’s all fictitious. It’s all made up in my mind, I guess; all wishful thinking.” Such weighty fare fills the self-titled full-length debut by Ritter, 18, and multi-instrumentalist Nick Wheeler, 20. Two kids from Stillwater, Oklahoma, shouldn’t know so much… Read more »

Radio Show Roundup: The Biggest Rock, Pop Holiday Concerts

‘Tis the season for holiday radio shows. As much a tradition as eggnog, mistletoe and broken resolutions, December always brings a bumper crop of all-star shows in which bands give back to their fans (and the radio stations that play their music) by jetting around the country and serving up short hit-heavy sets. The month of December will be especially star-packed for those living near Indianapolis, San Diego or Philadelphia. If you love Good Charlotte, Coldplay, Destiny’s Child and Queens of the Stone Age, you might want to cash in some frequent flyer miles, because those bands are among a… Read more »

System, Papa Roach Rage On Weenie Roast Stage While Jack Osbourne Holds Court

Not even his father could have said it better. “This is diet Ozzfest,” Jack Osbourne quipped backstage at the sold-out KROQ Weenie Roast. Southern California’s authoritative modern rock radio station hosted its 10th annual summer concert extravaganza on Saturday and, yes, it did offer a glimpse of the summer’s most anticipated tours, especially Ozzfest. Ozzy himself could not make the festivities, as his daughter Kelly was performing across the valley at KIIS’ Wango Tango radio show alongside the likes of Celine Dion and past Weenie Roast favorites No Doubt. Why wasn’t Jack there? “We don’t get along,” he clarified. Representing… Read more »

Blink 182's Hoppus Narrowly Avoids Jackson/Hetfield Flameout

Blink 182, Green Day, and Jimmy Eat World haven’t had any major accidents on the Pop Disaster tour so far, but there have been several times the tour nearly lived up to its name. Blink 182 bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus revealed that he nearly had a Michael Jackson/James Hetfield moment when one of the pyrotechnic devices almost burned him at one of the first few shows in California. “I got a little too close to one of the pyro hits, and I smelled my hair on fire-not on fire, but it singed the back of my hair. I could smell burning… Read more »

Green Day Overshadows Blink on Disaster Tour – Review

Two of the bands most responsible for the commercial popularity of melodic punk rock in the 1990s have come together for the coast-to-coast Pop Disaster tour, which touched down Wednesday at the nearly sold-out Forum after two big outdoor shows the previous weekend in Irvine. Both groups approached the show with a workmanlike greatest-hits mentality that was just a tad disappointing. If there was any doubt, Green Day – playing in the middle slot, after Jimmy Eat World – proved it is the better of the two veteran bands with a supertight showcase of its many hits. The San Francisco… Read more »

The Oakland Arena performance will benefit Children’s Hospital Oakland, the oldest and largest pediatric medical facility in Northern California, according to a band spokesperson. “Children’s hospital is a place all three of us have been in and out of as kids, and we are sure our kids will too,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong says. “It makes sense for our families and others in the East… Read more »
