Obama Steps Into History

Two years after beginning his improbable quest as a little-known, first-term Illinois senator moves into the Oval Office as the nation’s fourth youngest president. A King once stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with dreams of equality and respect. Today, a president will stand on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, living out that dream in front of an entire nation and creating a new chapter in American history. It’s a chapter many didn’t think they’d live to see. But the day is upon us, and millions of spectators will watch this historic event unfold between those two… Read more »

Sotheby's yanks 3 MLK papers from NY auction

NEW YORK — Sotheby‘s has withdrawn from auction three papers related to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr after his estate claimed the documents being sold by Harry Belafonte are estate property. Belafonte himself asked that the papers be withdrawn from Thursday’s sale, said Lauren Gioia, a Sotheby’s spokeswoman. The auction house did not comment further. The documents, including a handwritten draft of King’s first anti-Vietnam war speech in 1967, had a collective pre-sale estimate of $750,000 to $1.3 million. “The King estate believes the documents being offered in Thursday’s auction are a part of the wrongly acquired collection,” said a… Read more »

A Boy for Backstreet's Kevin Richardson

So this is one of “the other interests” Kevin Richardson was talking about pursuing when he quit the Backstreet Boys last year. The erstwhile boy-bander and wife Kristin welcomed their first child on Tuesday, according to a post on his MySpace page. “We are officially parents,” the 35-year-old singer wrote. “At 4:56 a.m. Tuesday morning (7/3/07), our son Mason made his entrance into the world.” The Richardson spawn weighed in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 20.5 inches, according to his dad, and “has a full head of dark hair.” “He and Kristin are perfect and I am a… Read more »

Billy Joel Embraces Composing State of Mind

DETROIT–Despite the recent appearance of “All My Life,” his first new pop song in 14 years, Billy Joel says he doesn’t foresee a re-opening of the creative floodgates that led to 33 Top 40 hits. “I’m not ruling out the possibility of writing songs again,” Joel tells Billboard.com. “I suppose if I had the motivation to write a song, I’m not gonna stop myself from doing it. I just haven’t felt the compulsion to write songs in pop form. I guess these days I just think of myself as a composer.” Joel — whose last album of original material, “River… Read more »

Avril, Christina's Multiple Personalities

What’s up with all the different versions of Avril in her new video? Or, for that matter, Christina, Ciara and Beyoncé? Everywhere you look, it seems some pop diva has replicated herself so she’s the star of her clip several times over. Multiple versions are nothing new – Mariah and Madonna are old pros by now – but the idea has been spreading like a video virus, with Avril and others just the latest to be infected. It got us to thinking – are they copying themselves or someone else? Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” Avril Lavigne gets to have it both… Read more »

Punk Veteran Gurewitz Succeeds by Not Selling Out

Around the time Brett Gurewitz was launching Epitaph Records in 1981, his father was lecturing him to take guitar lessons. The Bad Religion guitarist and punk-rock entrepreneur never sat down for courses with a guitar instructor, although he did go to school to learn to be a recording engineer. However, no amount of schooling could have prepared Gurewitz for the next 25 years of his life. Epitaph Records brought a new era of punk rock to the masses in 1994 when the Offspring’s “Smash” turned into one of the biggest rock records of the decade. The success of the label’s… Read more »

UNIVERSAL CITY, California – Chris Martin only forgot the words once.
