Primal Scream Turns Up 'Heat' On North America

Veteran U.K. rock outfit Primal Scream has set a Nov. 26 North American release date for its domestic Epic debut, “Evil Heat.” The album, which features contributions from Robert Plant, Kate Moss, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, and the Jesus And Mary Chain’s Jim Reid, was released in August in the group’s homeland.

The North American release of “Evil Heat” will be accompanied by a DVD featuring 45 minutes of bonus material. The video clips for “Miss Lucifer” and “Autobahn 66” are included, alongside videos of four songs performed live at August’s V2002 festival: “Rocks,” “Moving on Up,” “Swastika Eyes,” and “Kowalski.”

Frontman/vocalist Bobby Gillespie calls the album “electronic garage band future rock’n’roll,” which “is more up than its predecessor,” 2000’s “XTRMNTR” (Astralwerks). Gillespie, bassist Mani, guitarist Robert Young, and keyboardist Martin Duffy recorded the album with a variety of collaborators, including model Moss, who sings with Gillespie on an album-closing duet of Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra’s hit “Some Velvet Morning.” The reclusive Shields contributes his unique guitar sound and production to the album.

DJ Andrew Weatherall, an on-again, off-again group member, also mixed a few of the album’s tracks, including “Autobahn 66” and “A Scanner Darkly.” The latter began its life as a track called “Bomb the Pentagon,” which the band played live a week before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. and subsequently retooled and renamed.

Primal Scream’s highest charting album in the U.S. was 1994’s “Give Out But Don’t Give Up” (Sire) which peaked at No. 22 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Its biggest seller was 1992’s “Screamadelica” (Sire), which has sold 114,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
