The idea of The Black Parade marching its way to Broadway has swirled in fan circles for years—and now, the speculation is picking up steam once again. My Chemical Romance’s third album remains their magnum opus and a masterclass in theatrical storytelling and world-building, leading many to wonder if it’s only a matter of time before the emo opera transforms into a full-blown stage production. In a TikTok posted March 27, user @sweatyoracle stirred the pot with a bold claim: “BREAKING BROADWAY TEA EXCLUSIVE: MCR’s The Black Parade Musical?!?!” They go on to share, “I hear that My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade is being prepped for what may be a long road but a road to Broadway nonetheless.”

The video dives into the danger zone of adapting rock records for the stage. Particularly the “corniness” seen in musicals like American Idiot, Rent, and Hairspray. They share, “I really hope that The Black Parade can create something that’s No. 1, first and foremost, not theater kid corny… I believe there’s a way to turn albums from that time period into award-winning theater… I really hope that The Black Parade can fall more into that and less into American Idiot’s Broadway musical adaptation territory.”
Wrapping their take with conviction, they add, “We need something edgy. We need something interesting. Or we don’t need The Black Parade on Broadway.” Watch the full video from @sweatyoracle below.
In a 2021 interview between MCR frontman Gerard Way and Travis Mills for Apple Music 1, Way shares, “There was talks very early about some kind of animated musical. Then there was talks a decade or so later about a musical. But the person who approached me about this musical there said, ‘Are you ever interested in doing Black Parade as a musical?’ I was like, ‘To be honest with you, I think it’s too soon,’ at the time. I was like, ‘I don’t think the record has lived long enough.’”
He continues, “The Black Parade itself, just from all the art and the videos and the inside photographs. It really is this kind of massive world. I think within that you could do a number of things. There’s all kinds of different characters to explore. I mean, you could even end up with a totally different protagonist.”
