Major labels EMI Group and Warner Music Group separately unveiled new online systems Monday to streamline and improve the way their music is licensed.
EMI Music Publishing has revamped its online rights clearinghouse, adding a new search-and-license feature that lets users browse a catalog of more than 500,000 EMI songs and get an immediate rate quote over the Web.
The service does not include rights to EMI Recorded Music’s library of recordings, but EMI Music Publishing holds the rights from such hit songwriters as Rodney Jerkins, Carole King, Lenny Kravitz and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
The site also expands the search functions of EMI’s database, offering sound clips, lyrics, discography and other background information. Users can search by lyric or by using keywords to describe the desired mood or concept.
Warner Music’s Warner/Chappell publishing arm and its Special Products unit bowed http://www.OneStopTrax.com, a licensing site, catering mainly to film and TV music supervisors, that combines access to both publishing and recorded music rights in a single outpost.
Initially, OneStopTrax will offer about only 150 to 200 songs for combined publishing/recording clearance, but that number is expected to rise by year’s end, according to a WMG rep. Warner/Chappell administers the rights to songs from talent including Madonna and Elton John, while Warner Music’s stable of recordings features work from Eric Clapton, Metallica and Faith Hill.
