After initial denials, Britney Spears’ reps have now confirmed that the singer is engaged to her dancer boyfriend, Kevin Federline.
Rumors began circulating after Spears’ knee injury that the couple were talking marriage, but her spokespeople dismissed the rumors and said that the two were “serious” but “definitely not engaged.” However, the story changed Friday afternoon (June 25), and Spears’ camp confirmed what people had been speculating all along. No details are available on the impending nuptials just yet, and the couple has yet to set a date.
The news comes just six months after Spears was married for a whirlwind 55 hours. That marriage, to childhood friend Jason Alexander, was later annulled.
Spears and Federline, 26, first went public with their relationship on April 24, when they frolicked together on the beach in Santa Monica, California. Photos of their sandy romp upset Federline’s pregnant then-girlfriend of three years, former “Moesha” actress Shar Jackson, who is expecting her second child with him in July. Their first child is 2-year-old daughter Kori.
“He called me and said he didn’t want me to read about it somewhere before he told me,” Jackson told Us Weekly at the time. “We haven’t broken up – yet.”
Jackson told the press that Federline begged her forgiveness, only to meet up with Spears again in London after telling Jackson he was headed to Japan to shoot a Coke commercial. “If [Britney] and Kevin want to be a couple, that’s fine with me,” Jackson told Us Weekly. “But there are two little kids. She’d better be prepared to baby-sit.”
Federline joined Spears on her European tour, flying out to meet her on May 7 in Amsterdam, where they were photographed holding hands. A month later, they got matching double-dice tattoos – hers pink, his blue. Rumors that he had proposed started once he moved into her Santa Monica home after she canceled her tour and went home to recover from a knee injury.
The two reportedly met during Spears’ 2000 tour, when he danced for opening act LFO. Federline has also danced on tour with Pink, Usher and Destiny’s Child, and he appeared with Spears’ former boyfriend Justin Timberlake at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. The Fresno, California, native has danced in a number of music videos as well, including Timberlake’s “Like I Love You,” Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” and Michael Jackson’s “You Rock My World.”
