Avril Lavigne Says New Album Is Darker & Heavier

Avril Lavigne has been previewing songs from her upcoming album Under My Skin during her Avril Live And By Surprise mall tour. The singer has typically performed five of the new songs-“Don’t Tell Me,” “He Wasn’t,” “My Happy Ending,” “Take Me Away,” and “Nobody’s Home.” Under My Skin comes out May 25.

Lavigne revealed that Under My Skin will have a somewhat different feel than her 2002 debut, Let Go. “My singles are like pop songs, but the rest of the record is just, like, dark and it’s just my type of music,” Avril said. “I’ve got, like, dark piano stuff going on and I play piano. When I have been writing lately it’s just been dark stuff, kind of. I like a lot of guitars, and I like a heavy sound. A lot of my record is like that.”

Among Lavigne’s cowriters on Under My Skin are former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody; Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida; and Lavigne’s guitarist Evan Taubenfield.

Lavigne is nominated for two Juno Awards-the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys-which will be presented April 4 in Edmonton, Alberta. She’ll perform at the ceremony, and then again at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in Los Angeles on April 9.
