YUNGBLUD has already been leading a revolutionary musical movement spanning across generations, and now he’s aiming to inspire “the future of alternative and hip-hop.” Today, the UK artist has unleashed the collaborative single, “When We Die (Can We Still Get High?),” featuring rapper/hip-hop superstar Lil Yachty.

The track unfolds with an artful array of graceful guitar strums that captures a 90s Britpop/alternative rock sound, ushering in a slow-burn, toned-down vocal delivery courtesy of YUNGBLUD. In the quiet recesses of introspection, he asks, “Does heaven have a dealer?/Do they sell the love cheaper than in Hollywood?” As the notes weave together, a mellow and ethereal essence envelopes the composition, with a subtle infusion of psych-rock embedded into its core. In the accompanying video, YUNGBLUD slips through an array of sun beams as he soulfully croons, “When we die .. tell me can we still get high?/When we die .. tell me can we still get high?”

At the two-minute mark, the sonic landscape takes an enchanting turn as Lil Yachty joins the track and video. His addition introduces a layer of trippy, mind-bending vocal slides that further elevate the track’s transcendental journey. Lil Yachty‘s experimental psychedelic rock, a recurrent theme in his recent releases, finds a similar home in this collaboration. Together, YUNGBLUD and Lil Yachty sculpt a meticulously harmonized soundscape, offering listeners a gorgeously tranquil and immersive experience.

“‘When We Die (Can We Still Get High?)’ was one of the first songs I wrote when I got to New Orleans to make new music,” YUNGBLUD shares of the new release. “Me and Yachty have been talking since 2019, and I’ve always thought we were on the same trip—fuck the rules, push things forward. So, when I wrote the song, I knew he’d add something amazing. I wanted this moment to be a collision of each other’s imagination and sound. I’m really excited about it and for what it could potentially inspire between the future of alternative and hip-hop. Press play.”
