Out with the summer, and in with the fall! Not only is it back-to-school season…it’s also basically Halloween, and we are ready for all things creepy and spooky. From Fraternal Twin to Live Well, and beyond, these new songs will be your favorite new listens this month.
Fraternal Twin — “Halo Fell Forever”
Time to get existential with Fraternal Twin! The haunting indie-rock quartet is beginning the fall season with the perfect title track from Halo Fell Forever, out now. Frontman Tom Christie says, “‘Halo Fell Forever’ was a phrase that I heard very distinctly when I played back a bunch of vocal gibberish while recording the demo for this track. It almost feels like I didn’t write it–but it’s one of my favorite lyrics. It takes me back to this sort of ‘fall from innocence’ I experienced many years ago that kind of shattered the way I saw the world for a while.”
Christie adds, “I think it means something about learning from your mistakes and not worrying so much about trying to be perfect for others or who you think they want you to be. My bandmates unanimously agreed we should name the record after this song, but I was afraid to at first because it’s so personal, but they were totally right.” And if you’re just as obsessed with this track and record as we are…Christie assures we can “expect a lot more music from this band in the coming years.”
Live Well — “IDK”
Live Well has revealed their new single and music video “IDK” from their new EP, MORE THAN YOU CAN GIVE, and it’s an indie-emo lover’s dream, with melancholy acoustic strums and yearning verses. Frontman Paul Masbad says of the new song collection, “’MORE THAN YOU CAN GIVE’ is made up of songs written 6 years ago. Revisiting them now was like traveling back in time and having a conversation with our past selves. Each song is a representation of who I was, who I am, and who I want to become. It’s the band’s past, present, and future in eight minutes.”
Public Figure — “sober HUNGOVER”
Public Figure is here to fuel your fall with high-octane punk-rock via their brand new track. The Omaha quartet explains, “‘sober HUNGOVER’ is the first single off our upcoming EP titled ‘Create/Consume.’ The overarching theme of this EP is taking two things that are seemingly dichotomous, but actually are more intertwined than you think. ‘sober HUNGOVER,’ two things that seem opposite of each other but can’t exist without the other, represents both the traditional hangover involving alcohol AND in mental health, the emotional hangover.”
The band continues, “Our vocalist, Roger is approaching 4 years of sobriety and even though he is completely sober, he’s realized that alcohol isn’t the only thing that can bring the symptoms of a hangover. Sometimes its the aftermath of a panic attack or strong waves of anxiety. Struggling with mental health is something we can all relate to, and that’s exactly what this song is about. Honestly, if you have experienced any type of hangover, you can relate to this song.” Stay tuned for more music from the group.
Selfish Things — “Liability”
Selfish Things frontman Alex Biro says of the outfit’s new track “Liability” that “the lyrics were pulled from the tail end of my addiction. When you wake up to the fact that you were your own worst enemy all along. The fallibility of victimhood is multifold. The uglier and meaner the world becomes in the face of your pain, the uglier and meaner you become in return. All retch and no vomit. This song is for anyone who’s woken up to a mirror that doesn’t exist at the end of a hall. When the discomfort of realizing that we’re all our own worst enemies hits home.”
Uniquely, the raw track, which is set to appear on their LP Receptivity, due on October 9, via FLG, almost didn’t happen and neither was the record. Biro adds, “This wasn’t supposed to be an album. It’s still not really an album to me, or to any of us. More just… closure, I guess. I was at the beginning of my full-blown addiction on the last tour we ever did before COVID stopped the world in 2020. … The only thing that’s brought me peace in the aftermath of the cataclysm of my addiction is being of service to others. I think deep down, releasing this for whoever needs to hear it is an extension of that.”
DeathbyRomy — “LONELIEST GIRL”
DeathbyRomy just announced that her fifth studio album, Teenage Fever Dream, is on the way. Just in time for some Halloween listening, it’ll arrive on October 30, via ONErpm. Ahead of the LP drop, she revealed new offering “Loneliest Girl,” and it shares a story many young people can relate to. The singer shares, “‘Loneliest Girl’ is about a time in my life where I felt like I needed to have sex with someone in order for them to love me and in order to get the connection I so desperately wanted, but wasn’t finding anywhere.”
wakelee — “Statue”
Ahead of the release of their new record Under Construction Forever, due out October 9 via Wax Bodega, trio wakelee has arrived with their new track “Statue.” Beautifully mellow and utterly painful…this is what makes the indie-emo genre so unique. The band earnestly sings, “I’m sorry that you feel this way/But I don’t feel bad/It’s always the same thing with you/You’re on track to forget me too.” Rife with undeniable heartbreak, we truly can’t wait to see what more the group has in store for the new album. The Hails — “Pack It Up”
It’s almost time for The Hails to reveal Duckpond on October 23 via ONErpm…but first, the indie-rockers have dropped a groovy tune for your fall listening: “Pack It Up.” It is the uplifting, funky bop you need in your life right now…and it might throw you back to the OG days of indie sleaze. Frontman Robbie Kingsley says, “’Pack It Up’ feels like an ode to Julian Casablancas’ melodic capabilities – so much so that I was scared we were blatantly ripping off something from his discography. It carries the same vibe and feeling ‘Instant Crush’ gives me, but then it ventures off into an outro that doesn’t feel like anything he would even touch, which I do find a bit funny.” Secure your tickets to the upcoming tour here.
Girl Tones — “Precious”
Girl Tones really outdid themselves with this haunting title track to their upcoming album Precious, due out November 6, via Big Loud Rock. Singer Kenzie says of the song, “Our Abuelita passed away in 2020, and the song came from experiencing the grief of losing a loved one. She always referred to us as her ‘Precious.’ The handwriting on the [album] cover is actually from a card she sent to me. We worked on the album for a while, and it’s so precious to us. Around the time we said goodbye to her, I started dating my now-husband. As much as the song is about losing a loved one, it’s also about gaining a new loved one.” With stunning key and string arrangements, you can’t help but give it your undivided attention. Heartbreaking and healing at the same time, “Precious” is a track that everyone bearing the weight of grief will understand.
Stray View — “Shadows”
Stray View is gearing up to launch their new album Self Inflicted on October 16, via Hopeless Records. But first, the metal trio revealed “Shadows.” The band notes of their raw new offering, “‘Shadows’ is a song that describes my perception of uncertainty and fear of the world we live in today. It’s raising the question of whether or not we can handle the future of our existence or if we’re destined for failure.
