The Used Explore Feeling “Numb” Ahead of Ninth Album Release

Alt-rock idols The Used have launched their latest single “Numb” pulled from their tenth forthcoming full-length, Toxic Positivity, set to drop May 19 via Big Noise.

Leaning into their knack for honing in on the all-too-relatable, overpowering emotions associated with mental health struggles, The Used’s brand-new track explores the sensation of feeling like a ghost in your own skin when everything around you is too much and not enough all at once. Vocalist Bert McCracken’s piercing shrieks in the track’s recurring line, “Does anybody else feel numb?” is an indication of the recognizable emotions attached to anxiety and depression, and a welcome reminder that no one is facing these overwhelming sensibilities alone. Check out The Used’s latest effort below.

The monstrous track is the second preview of the band’s eagerly-awaited, forthcoming album. Toxic Positivity follows the release of the band’s 2020 full-length Heartwork, which saw them heavily lean into their roots and address the intrusive, negative emotions connected to mental health. In The Used’s signature fashion, the title, Toxic Positivity, offers a juxtaposition of the pressure that comes with constantly suppressing negative or intrusive thoughts and masking those emotions with forced optimism. If “Numb” and “People Are Vomit” is any indication of what’s to follow on the group’s forthcoming 11-track studio album, day-one fans are in for an overload of emotion, vulnerability, and heavy-hitting anthems. Check out the full tracklisting for Toxic Positivity below.
