The Oscar nominations for this year dropped and we need to talk about it. Some of our favorites did manage to get nominated. Best Picture is filled with incredible choices like Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fablemans, and All’s Quiet on The Western Front. Talented actors have been recognized like Michelle Yeoh, Brendon Fraiser, Angela Bassett, and Austin Butler. However, something not so great sticks out. The category for Best Director has managed to take a step back and not recognize any female directors. It would be one thing if we were lacking in incredible movies made by women, but that is not the case and the Academy knows it. How does Women Talking get a nomination for Best Picture but the director Sarah Polley gets left out? The award show has managed to make some progress the past few years, with nominations for female directors and even wins for Chloé Zhao and Jane Campion. It just doesn’t sit right with us that not a single woman got nominated.
