Gemma Chan, Henry Golding and more Rally Together for UK Campaign To Stop Asian Hate
United Kingdom celebrities are coming together for a campaign to stop Asian hate in the UK. Gemma Chan, Henry Golding, Benedict Wong, and Jessica Henwick are a few of the many celebrities who have helped launch the East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) Community Fund. The effort in partnership with GoFundMe aims to “uplift and protect ESEA people in the UK at risk of hate crime.” Chan took to Instagram after the launch of the campaign to share a few words about the racism her parents have faced since the beginning of the pandemic and reiterated the importance of this fund. “Like many others, I worry for family members every time they leave the house or use public transport. My mum has worked for the NHS for most of her life – she and my dad have been followed and subjected to a number of verbal assaults since the beginning of the pandemic,” she shared. Chan continued by saying, “There is an urgent need for increased awareness and support so I am proud to help launch this fund, which will provide grants to grassroots organisations supporting ESEA and broader communities.”
Since the launch, over £70,000 have been raised, surpassing the fund’s initial target of £50k. To find out more about the East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) Community Fund and how to donate you can head here.
