Lauran Hibberd is not only an internationally-acclaimed alternative pop sensation, but she is also a rising queer icon. Today, Hibberd shared her new double-date-themed music video for her recent single “mary.” The euphoria-inducing garage rock-tinged song is a brilliant, optimistic romantic track that sounds exactly like falling in love.

Hibberd shares that the song is her favorite she has ever written and “YES, it’s a true story, and YES, everybody needs a ‘mary’ in their life. After having a particularly rough year, having this song in my back pocket became a breakthrough for me—like a crack in the curtain where the light slips in.” Check out the real-life-inspired music video for “mary” below.

“Filmed on a day off from tour, in LA with some extremely cool people, we managed to recreate my double date. Of course, my double date was a more washed-out, Wetherspoons-coded version, but you get the drift,” Hibberd says of the video. “I was so excited to film this video in the States, and to mainly be outside in a skirt in October. This is my favorite video I have ever made, it reminds me of videos I grew up on and captures a nostalgia which I constantly crave when making music. Drenched in 90’s and early noughties references, the video is an exact play-by-play of the day I met ‘Mary’—aka the best day ever. Directed by the amazing Richelle Chen.”
