Can’t Swim has released a short yet intense new music video commenting on their lead singer’s frustration with how his friend was once treated. “Can’t See Straight” follows their last single released in April, and is a stark contrast to the previous release.
Where “No Backbone” features a pop-punk groove and layers, the new track is heavy, angry, and full of wrath.” With intense and heavy instrumentation accompanied by lyrics like, “Big shot when she can’t even stand/Passed out makes you feel like a man/One day you’re gonna get yours/When I kick down the door,” Can’t Swim clearly lay out what they think of those who mistreat women.
The track’s lyrics were written in a short timeframe and inspired by what happened to one vocalist Chris LoPorto’s friends. Every word is thoughtful, delivered with fury, and punctuated with raging riffs.

“Can’t See Straight’ is a song I wrote about an experience a dear friend of mine went through,” LoPorto says. “Frustrated and angry I quickly jotted down the lyrics the day she told me. I was on tour driving for another band at the time and actually recorded the final takes of the vocals in the front seat of a Penske truck. Though I wish I could reverse what happened to her I do hope this song can shed some light on a terrible yet very common occurrence that happens to too many women.”
Don’t let the timespan fool you. Shot by Errick Easterday, the accompanying video is only a little over a minute long, but the group uses every second to portray their vexation. With chaotic movements and sporadic scene changes, the accompanying imagery takes the fierceness of the track to a higher level.
The track is available via Pure Noise Records and can be streamed here.
