Boys Like Girls Are Speaking Our “Language” On New Single

Boys Like Girls Spring 2023

Boys Like Girls are once again dazzling their fans with their new single, “Language.” Released via Fearless Records, the track is an 80s-infused pop-rock banger about the power of non-verbal communication. Whether it’s a simple hug or a playful smile, the song invites its fans to think about the ways they express themselves and their longings without words.

Martin Johnson explains the inspiration behind “Language” in a press release.

“According to Google, there are around 6,500 languages in the world,” he begins. “I took French, Spanish, and Latin in school, but can barely get through asking where the toilet is in Montreal or Mexico City. I guess I’m a one-trick American pony and there are even some versions of English I barely understand. If you’ve ever been to northern Maine, backwoods Mississippi, or North Dakota, you may have an inkling of what I’m talking about. They say the two universal languages are mathematics and music. I suck at math, but I can tell you having played some decent-sized shows in non-English speaking territories that the latter is true for sure, and through those travels, I’ve also learned that it’s the silent languages that say the most.”

The Power of Human Connection

Learning from their journey as a band, the song is about the deep connections we can make with one another without words.

“Body language, love languages, the language of the spirit, and other nonverbal communications can be the deepest connections we have as humans,” Martin adds. “With the language of attraction, there tends to be a moment where you both figure it out…You feel safe, you feel seen, you feel excited. You pray you’re not crazy. A little touch, okay, you’re not crazy.”

The shimmering pop production paired with Martin’s introspective lyrics is what makes “Language” quintessentially a Boys Like Girls song. Yet it remains a fresh take on the band’s old sound, cohesive with the band’s comeback single, “Blood and Sugar.”
