Abbie Roper

New York City-based indie punk rocker Abbie Roper offers tracks that are ideal for any coming-of-age movie soundtrack. In 2023, the artist launched the single “Talking Casually,” delightfully combining fuzzy guitar lines and vocals with surf rock niceties to craft a genuinely glistening tune.

With classic emo/scene influences ranging from Fall Out Boy all the way to Paramore, it’s clear that new acts such as Abbie are ready to carry the modern rock torch into the future. If you ever get the chance to catch the up-and-coming artist at a NYC venue, definitely secure your ticket ASAP. You’ll be able to say, “I knew her when…” as she steadily blows up this year and beyond. Abbie promises that with the new year, she is “HITTING 2024 HARDDDDDD,” and we believe her. After hearing Abbie’s cover of Paramore’s “The Only Exception,” we are utterly obsessed.

Plus, as we wait for new tracks in 2024, we can enjoy Abbie’s gritty indie rock tracks from the past, including her most-streamed singles, “Heartfelt” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” Without a shadow of a doubt, we will be tuned into both her Instagram and TikTok to see what the budding artist and her band have in store for the year. —Maria Serra

alltheprettythings

Talk about a supergroup?! alltheprettythings, a dynamic “Elder Emo Supergroup™” hailing from North Carolina, brings a level of unparalleled expertise and collective experience that cannot be overlooked across their small but mighty discography. The ensemble boasts an impactful lineup featuring vocalist Logan Tabor (Damona Waits, Mood Mechanics), guitarist Tristan Matthew (Newlands, touring bassist for Chiodos), drummer Jeremy Bryan (Alesana), guitarist/producer Worth Weaver (He Is Legend, Thousand Foot Krutch) and Will Sowers (Emarosa, Collective Soul).

This five-piece’s journey began with the launch of their soaring debut anthem, “Teenage Lines,” in November 2022, setting the stage for the group’s discography to continue to unfold throughout 2023. During this time, the band steadily unveiled three carefully crafted singles: “Every Now And Then,” “I Want You Back,” and “Chin Up, Kid.”

The culmination of alltheprettythings’ relentless efforts peaked with the recent release of “Weeping Season,” a composition that reverberates with thunderous resonance, showcasing the group’s prowess. Although the group has only treated us to five tracks thus far, there is an unmistakable sense that they stand on the brink of delivering a plethora of tunes that we won’t be able to get enough of. As we eagerly anticipate the continuation of their journey ahead, we’re hopeful that 2024 will bring with it a full EP or studio album from the storied musicians. —Paige Owens

Coach Party

Imagine it is the summer of 2003—you’re in the street in front of your house with your childhood friends, learning how to do a kickflip for the very first time. Maybe you can’t get it quite right just yet…you’ve got bloody knees, but you’re determined and on the cusp of something great. That’s kind of like what listening to Coach Party feels like.

It’s youthful, attitude-filled pop rock with a splash of grunge and grit. Their most recent album, KILLJOY, is a culmination of “fuck the world, dude” tunes that belong in your own personal coming-of-age film. “What’s The Point In Life,” “All I Wanna Do Is Hate,” and “Parasite” are standout tracks among a record filled with exceptional songs.

Coach Party lends itself to a modern nod at the riot grrl movement. It is empowering and whimsical, all at the same time. They make important statements without taking themselves too seriously. Don’t sleep on this group. They’re destined for something big. —Tate Logan

Luke Middleton

Singer-songwriter and emo-rapper Luke Middleton possesses pain, grief, and heartbreak that could tear down anyone. Yet, he translates everything into a stand-out catalog of haunting recounts of life. Middleton also incorporates his previous experience as a U.S. Army infantryman into his art, giving another perspective that is rarely seen in the alt-rock scene.

With only seven songs released, along with one collaborative credit for Zoe Wilhoit’s “Romeo & Juliet,” he understands how to elevate this genre to build off of it in a unique, innovative, yet gripping way. Fans need to keep their finger on Middleton’s pulse so they don’t slip away. —Lizzie Baumgartner

Kanner

Kanner’s unforgettable combo of green outfits and red hair has been making a strong presence on social media and in the music world these past few years. Behind the scenes, she’s been building up an impressive resume of artists she’s written with, including Katy Perry, Scene Queen, and Set It Off, to name a few (the list truly does go on and on). She even co-wrote a song on the new Paw Patrol movie soundtrack.

In 2023, we got our first taste of Kanner’s original music. “Bull in a China Shop, ” which features 93FeetOfSmoke, has a catchy pop-punk vibe, and “Megaphone Mouth,” her latest single, is a chaotic, in-your-face track about being a woman in the music industry.

Knowing that Kanner has written with so many artists of varying genres has us excited to see how she’ll harness those experiences to continue developing her own sound. Based on the two songs we’ve heard already, there’s a lot to be stoked about.

Where 2023 brought us music from Kanner, here’s to hoping that 2024 brings even more new music and—of course—some touring! She also dropped by the idobi Radio studios several months back for an in-depth chat about her music, writing, and more, which you can watch right here. —Nick Major

Miki Fiki

Nashville-based artist and producer Miki Fiki, aka Ted Hartog, is a certified breath of fresh air. Infusing bright key melodies, iridescent vocals, and jazzy horns into his myriad tracks, Miki Fiki is a true spectacle. In a Passion Pit-esque juxtaposition, Ted pairs the most euphoria-inducing sonics with the most devastating lyrics imaginable—just take his beloved singles “Stranger” and “The First Time.” The raw narratives are certainly a testament to the artist’s unabashedly authentic writing style and will make you tear up on an otherwise joyous road trip. (I mean this as a compliment, Ted.)

This indie pop artist started off 2024 on a high note with the release of his January seven-track EP Half and Half, chock-full of delectable lo-fi instrumentals and vocals that feel like a warm hug. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s hard to deny there’s a certain comfort that comes with Miki Fiki’s discography, especially in Half and Half’s track “That’s Everything.” In a recent Instagram post, Miki Fiki shared, “Let’s be together more in 2024? I’ve got some plans, and I can’t wait to see you there.” Trust us when we say we will be tuned in for any announcements on the way. —Maria Serra

Mouth Culture

InVogue Records band Mouth Culture blends a plethora of genres, but not in a fashion that is overwhelming. In fact, it is a perfect concoction of alternative rock, indie pop, and grunge that creates a palatable yet unique sonic palette. They are groovy, catchy, and rough-around-the-edges in the best way. Tracks like “Don’t Pull Up”, “Sharkbait,” and “Johnny Cold Shoulder” present their impressive sound writing abilities on a silver platter. They are one of those bands you would find on an eclectic mix of support tours. Mouth Culture mends and meshes many styles, making music for almost anyone. You could see them opening for a group like The Band CAMINO. But also, it wouldn’t be weird to see them share the stage with Bad Omens

Their most recent effort, Mishaps Of My Mid Twenties, has no skippable tracks. It boasts a cohesive mix of songs, all fitting one thematic narrative. Older stuff stands strong, too. “These Days” and “You Just Don’t Do It For Me” are good jumping-off points to get into the band. We hope to see them make their way over to the United States in 2024. —Tate Logan

Queen Bitch

Step into the royal court of Queen Bitch. The captivating songstress and frontwoman, Róisín Bohan, recently graced us with her debut single, “Bones.” Making her grand entrance at the close of October 2023, Queen Bitch unveiled the intoxicating track that expertly examines humanity. The single experiments with lush garage sounds meets grunge instrumentation. Additionally, it features a standout guitar solo that adds a distinctive touch across its soundscape. Against this backdrop, Róisín’s resonating vocal prowess echoes through the unforgettable chorus. She coolly declares, “My bones, my bones/Won’t break anymore/My bones, my bones/Won’t break anymore.” You’ll be singing along before the track ends, trust us.

As we remain under the spell of Queen Bitch’s debut single, her discography continues to grow. Today, the Irish singer-songwriter has launched the new track, “Confines.” This newest addition, which the group initially began teasing in November, proves to be yet another indie garagey masterpiece. “Confines” effortlessly balances a sense of familiarity with a refreshing twist. Across the new release, the seamless interplay of skillful instrumentation and production takes center stage, complemented by an enthralling guitar solo and intoxicating lyricism. Queen Bitch may be on the ground floor of her musical journey, but she’s bound to ascend quickly to claim her throne. —Paige Owens

Scorched Waves

Blending the nostalgia-inducing bouncy indie of The Kooks with the edge of The Killers, Scorched Waves is the midwestern indie band to keep your eyes on. Hailing from Stevens Point, WI, this indie rock, “groove-punk” quintet packs a punch with their most recent single, “Dreaming Eyes.” With guitar melodies and tones reminiscent of early Green Day, this December single offering will have you hooked immediately.

It’s clear that this band has been working hard throughout the past year, putting out additional singles, “Cold” and “Bloom.” Both tracks feature glittering, nonchalant indie vocals and relaxed instrumentals, perfect for a good beach day. Of course, if you really want to dive into their discography, you can lean into the five pieces’ 2022 full LP, Televised Paradise, featuring the beloved title track.

According to the band, 2023 was the year of accomplishment. This list of achievements included going on their first tour across the U.S., selling out venues, winning first place at a music festival, and more. With these wins under their belt, it’s safe to say we’re thrilled to see their growth in the new year. Scorched Waves also shared that “we have a very exciting project on the way, we won’t say too much right now, but we hope it’ll leave you with a smile.” Fingers crossed for a new EP, at least! —Maria Serra

Thru It All

Blending hardcore, alt-rock, and hip-hop, the eclectic Thru It All is bringing a vibrant take on what “alternative” means. Their debut album, chaos zen, swings from traditional pop-punk in “holy water” to the standout opening track “superstitions,” which is rougher with screams and yells, and demonstrates their chameleon abilities. These Oklahomans understand the movement of music and know how to capture fans. With a few show runs completed and an upcoming gig at The Viper Room next month, these rockers are on their A-game. They’ve only layered up from their 2021 EP, The Irrelevant, and will continue that foray into notability in the alt-rock scene. If they’re not already on your list of rising artists you need to listen to this year, do yourself a favor and add them. —Lizzie Baumgartner
