The Riot grrrl movement began in the early 1990’s at the forefront of feminism, punk music, and political commentary. It was a genre built out of anger, frustration, and rage entirely crafted by badass women. These women aimed to express emotions considered acceptable for male songwriters at the time, but far less common for women. Growing out of the Pacific Northwest but quickly spreading across the country, acts like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney paved the way for many bands to come in the future. Smartpunk Records is bringing their Smartpunk House back to the iconic South By Southwest fest (SXSW) for the fifth year in a row. It’ll run March 16 and 17 at the Empire Garage and Control Room in Austin, TX, and begin at noon local time. Music enthusiasts will not need a pass to enter the free showcase. New York – Infinity Broadcasting is not commenting on a New York Times story that claims the company fired its top Rochester, N.Y., programer for accepting gifts from record companies. The news comes as another major radio player, Entercom, announces that it will no longer work with independent promoters. According to the Times, an internal Infinity investigation concluded that John McRae, who oversaw rock WCMF, modern WZNE, top 40 WPXY and adult top 40 WRMM, “had accepted an unspecified sum’s worth of gift certificates sent ostensibly for use in listener contests or in station promotions.” The Times cited as sources… Read more »
