Inside The White Stripes' 'Girl' Video Block Party

Remember how psyched you were as a kid to build a little car or a castle out of Lego pieces? Bet you never fashioned a fully functioning punk-rock duo and a kaleidoscopic world where they could swim, ride bikes and whale on the drums, though, did you? Don’t feel bad. You probably never got that sophisticated, but pioneering director Michel Gondry did, thanks to the White Stripes. In the eye-popping video for “Fell in Love With a Girl,” a two-minute blast of O.P.P.-like fantasy, the candy-colored pair from Detroit strum, jump and sprint their way through a building-block realm that… Read more »

DETROIT — The White Stripes drummer Meg White is engaged to Jackson Smith, the son of punk legend Patti Smith, a  publicist for the band confirmed. Conan O'Brien on White Stripes

One night in the late 1990s, Conan O’Brien was hanging out in a Detroit bowling alley after shooting a remote segment with Ted Nugent (”I rode around in the woods with him, we had a guitar duel and then fired guns,” he recalls). “I have this vague memory of these really cool kids coming over and hanging out with us,” he says. “I knew nothing about them or what they did.” A few years later, O’Brien learned he had met Jack and Meg White that day when he popped into a Saturday Night Live rehearsal to check out the White… Read more »

White Stripes rock New York in Garden debut

If there were any doubts that the White Stripes — consisting solely of guitarist Jack White and his “big sister” drummer Meg — could rock out the cavernous Madison Square Garden, the duo erased them with their debut there Tuesday night. “I don’t believe we’ve played this barn before,” joked the guitarist toward the end of their blistering set. Touring to promote their critically acclaimed new release, the explosive “Icky Thump,” the White Stripes made no concessions to the size of the venue. They played sans special effects for much of the set, save for a giant disco ball hanging… Read more »

White Stripes' 'Icky' Rules, But Gym Class Heroes?

First off, I’d like to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive feedback I received for the first edition of “Bigger Than the Sound.” There were a whole lot of really great comments made about the column – from your basic “this guy/MTV sucks” to the more advanced “this is my least favorite kind of pseudo-journalism” – but this was perhaps the best of the bunch: “For a bad, bad man he’s got some wack witeboy p—y taste in music.” – ILX member félix pié, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 17:41 If I knew how to work this Web site, I would… Read more »

White Stripes Heading to Warner Bros?

The White Stripes are close to inking a long-term, multi-million dollar deal with Warner Bros., sources have confirmed to Billboard.com. The group was previously aligned with the now-defunct V2 via frontman Jack White’s Third Man imprint, which also was home to his successful side band, the Raconteurs. The Stripes’ manager declined comment on the deal; the band’s publicist did not respond to a request for comment. The Detroit-reared rock duo has sold 4.5 million albums in the United States to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its last release, 2005’s “Get Behind Me Satan,” has shifted 850,000 and debuted at a… Read more »
