Elvis Costello Flashes Cruel Smile To Fans in October

In the late 1970s, Elvis Costello wore a punk snarl to go along with his sharp suits and horn-rimmed glasses. Twenty-five years later, the prolific troubadour has replaced it with something more subtly sinister. Cruel Smile, a companion LP to Costello’s latest studio album, When I Was Cruel, features B-sides, rare cuts and live versions from that album, as well as a handful of fan favorites. Due October 1, the 14-track enhanced CD also includes the video for When I Was Cruel’s “45,” according to an Island Records spokesperson. Costello selected the tracks himself, most of which were previously unavailable… Read more »

New Years Day Unleashes Fierce New Single, “Half Black Heart”

Following the release of their singles “Hurts Like Hell” in 2022, as well as “Vampyre” and “Secrets” in 2023, and the recent drop of “I Still Believe” at the top of 2024, New Years Day is back with a tantalizing glimpse into their forthcoming fifth studio album, Half Black Heart. Today, the group has unleashed the titular track, a powerful soundscape enriched by an infusion of guitar and drum-heavy industrial instrumentation. Frontwoman Ash Costello‘s unmistakable talent ignites the new song ablaze, delivering a scorching performance that grips listeners as she utters the opening lines, “Who died and made you king?/Who… Read more »

New Years Day Unleash Their Inner “Vampyre” In New Video

New Years Day is getting into the Halloween spirit with their merciless new single, “Vampyre.” The heavy and spookily-themed song is a hard-hitting follow-up to the band’s 2022 single, “Hurts Like Hell.” Juxtaposing drop-tuned guitar breakdowns with frontwoman Ash Costello’s soaring vocal delivery, the track tells an empowering story about escaping a relationship with a narcissist. It’s a reminder that no matter how scary it can be, nobody can take away a woman’s power and strength to move forward beyond the pain and trauma.  Read more: 9 Alternative Artists To Get You Into The Halloween Spirit Costello explains the symbolism… Read more »

Clash of the Mallpunk Titans

Few things are sadder than aging punk rockers attempting to cash in on their misspent youth, especially their desperate act of trying to recapture the glory days of fickle preadolescents with disposable incomes. Such is the lot of Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, purveyors of a Splenda version of pop-punk so lightweight that only Top 40 radio will touch it. Not that the bands resemble glossy pop stars, per se: GC’s members look like thugged-out suburbanites who overdosed at the tattoo parlor, and the Plansters are the mischievous skater kids hellbent on crashing keggers thrown by the football jocks. Good… Read more »

Clash, Police, AC/DC Enter Rock Hall

The annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony featured the spirit of 1970s British punk, some anti-war sentiments and probably the loudest noise ever heard at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. In what’s often the case at the glittery ceremony, the honor also brought together a long-estranged group, in this case the Police. The British trio played publicly Monday for the first time in 18 years, singing the reggae-tinged “Roxanne,” the obsessive hit, “Every Breath You Take” and “Message in a Bottle.” “I’d like to make it very clear that there is absolutely no ego in our band whatsoever,”… Read more »

Eminem Delivers Rousing 'Lose Yourself,' Clash Get A-List Tribute At Grammys

In a year fraught with political turmoil, turbulence and insecurity, music fans turned to their favorite songs to take them away from many of their problems and help them come to terms with others that were impossible to escape. Whether it was Eminem rapping, “Lose yourself in the music,” or Bruce Springsteen singing, “Come on up for the rising/ Come on up, lay your hands in mine,” the messages of unity were universal. At the 45th annual Grammy Awards, held Sunday (February 23) at New York’s Madison Square Garden, apolitical hedonists and social activists alike rallied together to celebrate the… Read more »
